What I really like is the way she addresses social issues so honestly.
"When she was 22 the future looked brightI'm very impressed with her changing sound, and her lyrical content.
But she's nearly 30 now and she's out every night
I see that look in her face she's got that look in her eye
She's thinking how did I get here and wondering why
It's sad but it's true how society says
Her life is already over"
Another singer I'm really impressed with is Regina Spektor. She's a delicately pretty Russian Jewish New Yorker, and she writes beautiful piano-driven songs.
That is probably my favourite of hers, telling the love story between Samson and woman the Bible doesn't recall.
You are my sweetest downfallAnd this is one from her latest album:
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads
But they're just old light, they're just old light
Your hair was long when we first met
Samson came to my bed
Told me that my hair was red
Told me I was beautiful and came into my bed
Oh I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
And kissed me 'til the mornin' light, the mornin' light
And he kissed me 'til the mornin' light
No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine testsCheck her out!
No one's laughing at God when it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from that party yet
No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake
No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken
No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say "We've got some bad news, sir,"
No one's laughing at God when there's a famine, fire or flood
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they're about to choke
