Chapter 84: What Happened to Halloween?

The evening's festivities are over, and my wife and I are settling in for our annual Ghost Hunters live event. I don't know if it was the drizzle and rain or something else, but this year's Halloween was disappointing.

Not many kids stopped by in their costumes. We have too much candy left over. And even the costume creativity seems to have taken a nosedive. I'm just not that impressed.

I used to look forward to Halloween as a kid. It was a night to go out after dark, explore, get candy, and goof around. I looked forward to seeing what others would wear and, in case I forgot to mention it, getting candy.

This year it was a Saturday night. I expected more children, not fewer. Are people afraid to let their children roam a neighborhood?

Now that I'm a father, I look forward to taking my girls around the neighborhood. I think I might even enjoy dressing up to give people a little scare as well. Forget the associations with paganism and satanism that some people place on this celebration of individuality, Halloween is Mardi Gras for children. It should be cherished and enjoyed.

Christmas Greeting

The exchange of greeting cards during Christmas is an integral part of the Christmas celebrations because this is a means to stay connected with our dear ones who are away from us in the festive season.

http://www.skthew.com/upload/image/christmas_greeting.jpg

Through the Christmas Greetings we convey our festive messages to them and wish them well for the holiday and the New Year ahead. Here is Christmas Carnivals providing you with information on the Christmas Greeting Messages.

It was only after the 1870s that the concept of sending greeting cards became a very common affair during Christmas and it is believed that the first ever card was made in London in 1846. The most common message in the greeting cards during Christmas are to wish for happiness and prosperity during the festive season and the New Year ahead, so that the festivities may continue in all our lives all throughout the year. These messages can be written in plain language or a small poem can be used to convey the sentiments. There are various kinds of Christmas poems available, so whether you wish to send a humorous Christmas message or a love message to your beloved during the festive season, you will find it all.

The quotes from the Bible also are mostly used as messages on the greeting card, because there can be no better means to convey the true essence of Christmas than by quoting the words from the Holy Book of God. Besides these you can also write your own personalized messages on the greeting cards, which may include your special appreciation or thanks giving for a particular friend or relative, whose help in the past you greatly appreciate.

More Altavista searches!

Okay, so maybe these are just Google searches that found my blog. But whatever!

"mdma got you feeling like a champion" meaning
This is a line from Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind, and it's in the verse where he talks about the city as a corrupting influence. MDMA, or Ecstasy, is a drug with some hallucinogenic properties, and usually gives the user a feeling of euphoria. So in the context of that verse, the New York City resident has taken some X and is feeling awesome.

kick to the nads
Ah yes, the good old kick to the nads. If you haven't been on the receiving end of one of these, count yourself lucky. Any bloke can tell you it's a horrible experience. For those who don't know, "nads" are a guy's balls. And a kick to them is painful. It's like feeling horribly sick in your stomach, but with shooting pain fanning out in every direction. And the pain sits a bit lower.

lion wing and lion with wing
I'm going to group those together. I assume they might have been looking for info on Gryphons. Or maybe the Lion King? Or maybe lions who know Wing Chung Kung Fu???

johnny teflon with mariah carey nsw?
Hmmm.... ummmm.... no idea on this one. Maybe they were looking for something Not Safe For Work (NSFW)? Or maybe she's coming to New South Wales with the aforementioned Johnny Teflon? I don't know much about the latter. But I'm pretty sure you could find some NSFW shots of Ms Carey on the web somewhere, if you were prepared to look hard enough (I'm not).

opposing viewpoints for u2's pride in the name of love
No idea how this person found me, but they spent 10 minutes looking around the blog. Hope you liked it, mystery U2 person! As for Pride (In The Name Of Love), I have a couple of things to say.
1) Great song
2) Seems to be about sacrifice
3) And a bit about dying for a cause
4) Martin Luther King and Jesus get mentioned
5) John Legend's version is fantastic

lyrics "speech first of all I want to thank"
This is the opening line to Jay-Z's And The Winner Is. First of all I wanna thank my connect - the most important person with all due respect.

de shannon - home and away
No idea who this is. Can anyone help?

AND NOW
Yes, yet another series of boob-related searches.

busty black women
celebrity busty bikini
natalie tran cleavage

The first one is easy to fix - Beyonce.
Second one? Hmmm... I've got it! Try The Sun.
And finally, the lovely Natalie Tran. She really is great. Check out her videos on YouTube. I'm not going to help anyone find her cleavage though.

First Impressions In the Speech Driven Life

Today I post a page out of my book-in-the-works, The Speech Driven Life. I began the book to help equip students to speak the Truth with sincerity, skill and grace. While it is intended to prepare students for competitive public speaking, I think it's practical enough to be of benefit to every ambassador for Christ.

How to Make a Positive First Impression

It has been said that within ten seconds after entering a room most people will make a snap judgment about the social environment. In short order they’ll decide whether or not the people there are friendly. It’s called a first impression. Likewise, when you walk into a room you’ll be sized up in a matter of moments. People will notice your clothing, your hair style, the expression on your face, your posture, and your body movements.

When you speak, people will notice the quality of your voice. They will notice your pitch, your tone, your rate, your accent (if you have one), and your enunciation. They will make judgments about your emotional state based on your tone and style of delivery. Lastly, perhaps, they will notice what you have to say, which they will interpret by the first impression they have already made of you.

As a speaker you are essentially performing for an audience of judges. This is literally true if you are involved in formal speech competition. The more intentional you are about making a positive first impression, the easier it will be to establish the trust and credibility it takes to effectively communicate your message.

Here are some essential components for making a good first impression. These tips apply to the professional looking attire you would wear in speech competition, and they are good to consider for personal appearance in general.

1. Smile

Your face is your most important means for making a positive first impression. Wear a smile that can be seen in your eyes. It communicates friendliness and confidence. A grumpy disposition is a poor representation of a faith that brings joy. Avoid chewing gum or eating when you speak. Check to make sure you don’t have parsley stuck in your teeth or food smeared on your face. It’s distracting.

2. Dress to Feature Your Face and Hands

Wear clothing that directs people’s attention to your face. Dark suits allow your face to stand out in contrast. Include attractive colors in your attire (shirts, neck ties, scarves) to add warmth and personality. Dress modestly. Avoid clothing that directs undue attention to parts of your body other than your face. Avoid wearing colors and patterns that clash. Wear a hairstyle that keeps your hair out of your face and makes you look respectable. Keep jewelry to a minimum so that your eyes are the main focus. Temperatures permitting, wear long sleeves so that your hands stand out in contrast to your clothing and are easy to see.

3. Use Good Posture and Natural Movements

Good posture and smooth hand movements also help make a positive first impression. Take deliberate steps when entering a room. Let your hands swing naturally at your sides when you walk. Keep your hands visible and out of your pockets. Don’t slouch or look off balance. Let the impression you make show that you enjoy being with the people there, and that you look forward to communicating with them.

4. Sound Confident and Personable

The first words you speak will make an impression. Speak them loudly and clearly, in a calm, controlled voice. High-pitched, rapid speech indicates nervousness. Try to make your voice sound confident and friendly, generally in the lower part of your vocal pitch range. A greeting or welcome is a good way to be personable with your audience and put them at ease.

5. State a Clear Purpose and Preview Your Points

Let your audience know why you are speaking to them. State your topic clearly and give a preview of your main points. Hint at your conclusion to keep them tracking with you.

6. Have a Strong Beginning and Ending

Audiences tend to remember the beginning and end of a presentation the most. Make your opening and closing strong and memorable.

7. Keep Things Short, Sweet and Simple

Be enthusiastic. Be sincere. Be brief. People will appreciate it. Show gratitude to your audience for their attention.

Two Days Until Halloween

By now I would imagine that everyone has decided what they are going to be for Halloween. Does everyone know what they are going to do?

Our plans for Halloween have changed over the years. For the last few years our family has met at the mall. This year I’m not sure if we will go there or not. There is a park close to us that has a big event. Maybe we will go there. Whatever we decided I know that we will have a good time.

We are in the process of adding a new line to our kids Halloween costumes. Here is a sneak preview.

The Catch Up

So I've been catching up on the internet today while I'm back in Hobart for a flying visit. A couple of things.

I love it when the Fug Girls have Jennifer Lopez on. The posts are hilarious.

Kanye posts a link to a day spa (that's d-a-i-y-e) straight out of Zoolander.

Speaking of Kanye, he's gone back to posting pics of girls again, although this time without the "Where are you Yeezy??" captions. I'm not sure what that means. He stopped posting pics of them for a while, but it seems like he's back with a vengeance.

This may scar you for life, but you can buy actual ladies underwear with Robert Pattinson's face on them. Yes. YES. IT'S TRUE.

Back to Kanye for a second, here's Spike Jonze slapping him in the face.

Behind the Scenes With Kanye from We Love You So on Vimeo.

Here's a really good article about working down a coal mine. I went down Beaconsfield Mine recently. It was a weird experience. I could have been 10m down a tunnel... but I was 1.2km straight underground, with 20-30km of tunnel above me.

Brett Geeves = Blogging Genius

My main man Brett Geeves gets some media attention thanks to AAP.

You can read his latest entry, posted on my birthday, here.

Favourite quote:
"I would like to quickly acknowledge Peter English for giving this blog a good plug in a Cricinfo article he wrote about a fortnight ago. Speaking to Peter was like chatting to an ex girlfriend. Once you get past the flirtatious eye contact and the wandering hands, it turns into a pleasant experience!"

Best Halloween Costume EVER!

Wicked cool.

You had me at Jill Valentine (UPDATE)

This is old news, but Resident Evil 5 Alternate was shown at the most recent Tokyo Game Show. The big hooks are that it will support the new motion wand and contains a new sub-chapter with Jill and Chris. The jury is out on the motion wand thingy, but I’m psyched for this extra story as well as playing as Jill in the main game instead of the special mission modes.

Since Capcom added costumes for the PC version, I’m betting there will be at least one more set for this update. I had an “incident” with my 360 save file so starting fresh on the PS3 is fine by me.

BAYONETTA!
I checked out the PS3 Bayonetta demo via a Japanese account and the game just rocks. It’s going to be very hard to wait till January to play this. Kotaku posted some costumes in the game and they are…um…interesting? I’m not crazy about them, but I’ll take them since they are free (at least they better be)!

The closest thing to it is Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 which I also finally got around to checking out in demo form. Feels pretty much like the first game with minor tweaks. It’s on my watch list for sure. Just depends on when some free time opens up and perhaps any price drops happen.

TEKKEN
According to FedEx tracking, my Tekken 6 box should be arriving sometime today. Very excited to check out the first wireless arcade stick. I have complete faith in Hori that it will be a quality stick. I chose the 360 version since the majority of fighting games in my library are on it (Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur IV, etc). Sort of want a wireless stick for the PS3 too since my copy of SFIV is on that system.

That will have to wait a while till my wallet cools down. Maybe closer to the release of Super Street Fighter IV perhaps. I’m sure the flood of other wireless sticks and fighter pads will be in full force by then.

UPDATE!
More Bayonetta costumes are surfacing. Original source here, which I put on my RSS after being alerted via Kotaku.
Yikes

Little more classy. Sort of.

Almost famous

Some famous people I've interviewed.

1. Ricky Ponting
2. Peter Daicos
3. Brendan Fevola
4. Wil Anderson
5. Ricki-lee Coulter
-------
6. A lot of AFL footballers

My favourite? Ricki-lee, of course! I think she's awesome. Always have. She was great on Idol, got dumped in a terrible, terrible shock, and sings like an absolute weapon. And she's the first ever covergirl on Ralph magazine to be size 14 (ie, she's about normal for an Australian woman, except that she's also quite tall). I love seeing her do well. Fev was an interesting one. I interviewed him in his hotel room, while he was lying on his bed playing online poker on his laptop. He was good to chat to.

The one that got away
Shaun Micallef, in my first week as a journalist (I was still on trial!). I was meant to interview him but his publicist said he was running late and had to rehearse, so I ended up having a crappy interview with a local flackey about the arts program or something boring. If I'd been even slightly more experienced I would have got it sorted so I got the interview. However I had been a (trial) journalist for all of five days. So sadly I didn't to interview one of my favourite ever comedians.

Only built for Cuban Links

Links!

The best headline (and story) ever. H/T Shaun.

The Walkey Foundation's gallery of Sport Photography finalists.

Article about how AFL is spreading into Germany.

Really interesting interview with British boxer David Haye, who is taking on the 7'2" Beast from the East in a heavyweight boxing match. Haye seems funny and intelligent, and also appreciates a good ring card girl.

And finally, pictorial evidence of why nothing - nothing - Australia does will make any difference to the amount of carbon pollution in the world.

A New Twist on Play Dough

Mama K's Aromatic Play Clay, is a natural alternative to store-bought play dough. The collection consists of seven colored clays scented with bergamot, cardamom, chamomile, geranium, lavender, lemongrass and sweet orange.

"The smell is part of the experience," she says. "It lingers on the hands and leaves them feeling nice and moisturized."

Erickson-Valenzuela sells her clay to therapists who work with special-needs children, explaining that the scent enhances the therapeutic quality of the play clay.

This clay is free of common allergens such as chemical dyes, gluten, soy and nuts. It is a little softer than the classic commercial play dough we're all familiar with, but is just as fun to play with and create snakes, snowmen, balls or whatever else your imagination can conceive.

Mama K's clays retail for $22 for a set of five scents, and individually for $4.50 each. They can be purchased online at http://www.mama-ks.com

This does not surprise me.

Heidi Montag and her husband Spencer Pratt did not attend her sister Holly Montag's 26th birthday party because "Heidi only goes places if she is getting paid."

Someone at the birthday party said this..... "Holly was really wishing that her sister could just be a sister and stop by her birthday party…I mean, this is her sister and she wouldn't even show up without a fee. That's disgusting."

Heidi and Spencer are a class act, more people should be like them. YEAH RIGHT!

Down on the Farm

Florida has lots of farm country, and what goes with farming? Cows, Pigs and Horses.

This adorable little cow costume almost makes you want to start a dairy or beef farm.

Wouldn't you just love to have a little pig? My brother had one years ago. Her name was Pearl. They are very smart, and will follow you around just like a dog.

Maybe you would just like to settle for this little pig costume. Wouldn't your little one just be to cute in this?

I grew up with horses, and loved riding.
My little granddaughter loves horses too. Sometimes plays like she is a horse. She will crawl around rear up and neigh.

Sometimes we can't have the real thing, but what about this pony costume?

Suri HEARTS Australian fashion

I apologise for the minimal posting of late - I am finally back online tonight as we have just moved to our beautiful new farm and I have spent the last week packing and unpacking boxes, cleaning the new house, organising tradesmen and adjusting the girls to their new schedule. It is safe to say we all love it out here - it is so peaceful and pretty. It sounds so cliched but we are awoken every morning by a family of kookaburras - so very Australian! Speaking of all things Australian, I have been catching up on all things Suri from my friend Vania's website Suri Cruise Italia and it appears that Katie & Suri spent alot of time during their stay here in Australia shopping up big with some of our wonderful local children's labels. This week in Boston Suri has been seen in seed (of which the Cruise's are big fans, having several pieces from their collection), Polka (I love all their prints!) & Mini Metalicus (who have a fabulous women's label as well). Please check out Suri Cruise Italia for all the details of Suri's fashions - Vania is always first to find Suri's wardrobe details - and her website is generally just awesome!
