Death Death Alas

To quote Laura:
Also, any album title that contains the word "alas" immediately gets put into the "nauseatingly pretentious" category. Dude. It might as well be called, "In Which I Employ Stunningly Impenetrable 'Poetry' Which I May Or May Not Have Swiped From The Cover Of My 15-Year-Old Niece's Trapper-Keeper, Woe Is Me, Je Ne Sais Quoi Death Death Alas".
This is very true. My mate Jman is down from Sydney at the moment (hence the lack of blogging), and at a housewarming the other night he performed a song he wrote for a girl when he was in grade nine. It was called 'Tasting the Raindrops'. If we're friends on Facebook I can give you a link to a video of him hilariously performing it a few months back. It includes the line "tasting the raindrops you and me, tasting the raindrops and dancing in a storm." (The 'dancing in a storm' line was clearly very good, so he repeated it in a verse as well). Anyway, it's fun to look back and laugh.

Back in the day Shaun and I had lots of fun reading Teen Angst Poetry, a website devoted to adults who sent in their atrocious poetry from their teen years. You can read a fair few of them on the semi-defunct blog here. Now, I never wrote bad teen angst poetry. And thankfully I didn't write any songs. So what did I do to get out my teen angst? I mostly did the dishes and played basketball outside. I was the family dishwasher for many many years, which explains my current lack of interest in washing up until it's completely necessary. One day - one day - I will live in a house with an electronic dishwasher. I've heard they're these new inventions in Japan, so hopefully they'll arrive here in a decade or so. Apparently you rinse your plates and then put them in the dishwasher, press a button, and they get washed! Amazing!

But anyway. Yes, I played basketball and talked to my younger sister as my way of getting out any teen angst I felt (which wasn't much). I wasn't an angsty teen. And once I fell in love in grade nine, I didn't write letters or anything. We just talked a lot on the phone and at school.

I think that pattern continues to this day. Any angst I feel has to be talked out. Some people write poetry, or songs, or think angry thoughts in their dark bedrooms. I talk.

ALSO

'Death Death Alas' is totally the name of my faux-emo band.

Moofies

Not that I've finished Brave New World (I'm reading it in fits and spurts at the lady's house), but I liked what one of the forewords said. It quoted Huxley as saying he wanted to find the perfect balance between essay and novel. I like that. He wanted to use the medium of a novel to make arguments like an essay. I think it's a very powerful tool. A number of other books do the same thing, with 1984 and Animal Farm being very famous examples.

These days people trying to get a message across tend to use film. We've had anti-racism films, anti- and pro-war films, anti-big government films...

What are some of your favourite message films? I like Lord of War and The Dark Knight. They're two that spring to mind. Eagle Eye was a recent example of one (not that it was especially great). Anyone got any others?

Also, an interesting article on why Christian films are so bad.

Swine Flu....cough....cough

There was a pandemic of Swine Flu back in the mid-70's. These are terrible commercials, but they make me giggle inside. Enjoy.

Daisy of Love

"Daisy of Love" debuted this past weekend on VH1, she was one of the girls on Bret's show, and she made it almost to the end. Now she has her own show and wow some of these guys are tools. I know how guys can be sometimes, but it's even better to see it all on tape trying to get one girl. Daisy gave them nicknames and they are hilarious.

Chi-Chi
12 Pack
Big Rig

Professor
Fox

All of your names sound REAL stupid and I hope you do not end up with her for the sake of you being a D-bag.

Losing costumes from damaged save files and red rings

During a speed run on RE5 to unlock the rocket launcher, my 360 froze during a save point rendering the file corrupt and wiping out all data. I had wanted to move on to another game so there wasn’t as much anger as there should have been. A few days later, the 360 red ringed. I checked what type and it’s the dreaded internal hardware variety that has to get fixed by MS. My console was still covered since this is my second red ring.

Then I remembered I wanted to snap some shots of the costumes for this blog and the anger returned. Getting all the emblems to unlock Tribal Sheva was a huge pain in the ass and so was unlocking everything in Mercenaries mode. It’s good that the Street Fighter IV DLC was purchased on the PS3 and not 360. I’m trying to see if it’s possible to shift all my gaming to the PS3. The only drawback is that I’m hugely addicted to Fallout 3 and all the DLC is 360 exclusive. I was also in the process of downloading Outrun arcade. Seems MS was wise to shell out the money for exclusive 360 DLC after all.

An Ode

Always there when I need you.
Never questioning why I want to spend time with you, just happy that I am.
It doesn't matter what else I've got going on, you're always there.
Sometimes you're hard to deal with and you make me confused. But you're always prepared to start again and try to make things work.
Most of the time I work out what's going on with you pretty quickly. Other times you leave me baffled.
I've spent a large part of my life with you, and I'm prepared to spend even more.
Freecell - it's been a good run. Here's to many more years.

Celebrity Baby Shoe of the Week Part 3 - pediped Soft Sole Baby Shoe

When a baby girl is out helping mummy promote her book, looking gorgeous is a must. Stella McDermott was on hand to help mummy Tori Spelling at the launch of her new book, Mommywood, and as you can see she looked cute from head to toe. About those toes, we just love the pediped range of children's shoes and Stella is wearing the Natasha Houndstooth Fabric Mary Jane soft soled baby shoe. How much does she look like her daddy, actor Dean McDermott?

Junk Food Tshirts - lots of fun prints to choose from

For those of you that have read my blog from the start, will know I love two things - the colour red (especially shoes and dresses) and logo/printed tshirts. I am such a fan of cute printed tshirts that I actually bought myself a Smurfette tshirt the other day to wear to the gym. Very 1980's. This week we saw actor Balthazar Getty taking his children to the Kabbalah Centre in LA and 7 year old daughter Grace was wearing a really cute vintage Pepe Le Pew tshirt that says "Love Stinks", the same print High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens has herself worn in the past (above left). Check out the Junk Food Clothing website - they have some really cool prints to choose from

Celebrity Princesses - from boots to scooting - getting around on the Mini Micro Scooter

After seeing some groovy little shoes on some of our favourite little fashionistas this week, the Mini Micro Scooter has popped up as the popular mode of transport for our pretty little friends. Ava Eliot Jackman was first seen on hers back in March and this week we have seen Matilda Rose Ledger & Clementine de Vere Drummond scooting around their neighbourhoods on the same pink Mini Micro Scooter. Clementine in new to our blog - she is the daughter of model Claudia Schiffer & film producer Matthew Vaughn, and we hope to see more of her soon : )

Celebrity Baby Shoe of the Week Part 2 - Ava Eliot Jackman in Red Sequin Converse Sneakers

Spending a family day out at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Aussie superstar Hugh Jackman carried his beautiful little girl, Ava Eliot, on his shoulders. We LOVE the sequin Converse sneakers - Gigi wants a pair too!

Celebrity Baby Shoe of the Week Part 1 - Olive Cohen in Converse Kids Chuck Taylor All Star Sneakers

Out for coffee with actress mummy Isla Fisher, little "baby Borat" Olive Cohen wears the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 2 Strap Black Unisex Infant Sneakers. It is hard to tell in this photograph but Olive's cardigan is very similar to the Baby Gap Cable Knit Hoodie the Jolie-Pitt sisters wore back in February. All round, too cute!

Lest we forget

I saw a little bit of a doco on SBS the other night about African-American soldiers during WWII. They talked about the thousands stationed in the Pacific, fighting the Japanese, and the contact they had with Australian troops.

The black men they interviewed gave glowing reports of the Diggers, and how they related to each other. This was the 1940s, when blacks were still second-class citizens in America. These old soldiers said the Aussies treated them with respect. They invited them to visit their families in Australia when the war was over (many took them up on this offer).

The thing that stuck out the most was the fact that when there was any trouble between the white American soldiers and the black American soldiers, the Aussies always jumped in in defence of the underdogs. We love underdogs, and we hate unfounded arrogance. And in that situation, there were clear underdogs and a whole lot of unfounded arrogance.

So many of the ANZACS are dead, and it's getting harder to remember them without further mythologising their achievements. We need to remember they were humans, just like us, who made mistakes, made hard decisions, and probably got them wrong as often as they got them right. But they were guided by decency and respect. I think that shows through in the way they treated the black American soldiers. They didn't have to be nice to them. But they were.

And a whole lot of them died. So millions and millions of us can go through life without ever having to fire a gun in anger. Without watching the government take away our livelihood with no recourse through the law. Without living in the real fear our sisters or daughters would be raped by armed men, immune from prosecution. Without ever really having to confront the sharp and harsh reality that human life on this planet can entail.

We've got it good. Unashamedly, we are the lucky country. In a large part, that is down to the men who fought so hard across four continents to keep this island at the corner of the world safe.Lest we forget.

Indie Irwin and the Croc Men

If you like the indie music sort of thing, here's a few to check out.

Laura Marling
Cute songs, along similar lines to Kate Nash and Soko, Laura Marling is a young British singer-songwriter. Her album Alas, I Cannot Swim also contains some Dido-style influences. The lead single, 'Ghosts', made it into JJJ's Hottest 100 this year.

Holly Throsby
An Aussie with a folksy, acoustic sound, she's released three albums. Her most recent, A Loud Call, is very good. 'Warm Jets' and 'Would You?' are two of the best tracks.

Bon Iver
American indie-folk band, led by Justin Vernon. The album For Emma, Forever Ago is interesting. The single 'Skinny Love' is probably the most recognisable track.

Of course, if you like indie music, you've already heard of all three of these and you're like 'Dude, get with the program! Listen to Pollyanna Locke or Gertrude Faison or Calvin Broadus.' (Those names don't actually exist... but they sound like indie folk singers, yes?)(Actually, one of them exists. Guess!)

Ooh La La! Lovely Leni is Tu-Tu Cute!

Looking every bit as lovely as her supermodel mummy everyday, Heidi Klum's little princess, Leni, looks delightful in her Ooh La La Couture Pink lady Poufy Dress

A Nazi piece of work

I just finished The Boys From Brazil this morning. A good, fun read. Without giving too much away, it's about Nazis.

I think it was Shaun I was talking to a while ago and he said something along the lines of:
"You can get away with killing a heap of people, as long as they're Nazis."

And it's true. In movies, books, computer games... if you're looking for an antagonist to cause some shizz, just throw in Nazis. Everyone loves killing them. The Russians were for a while, but it's different with the Nazis. With the Russians, you got the suspicion that they were only guarding the military installation because they were forced to. With the Nazis, they did it because they loved to guard. I think our popular perception of Nazis includes these factors that make them supremely killable villains.

- Arrogant belief in their genetic superiority.
- Tall, blond, muscular and good-looking, they are the high-schools jocks of the martial world. Inferiority complexes ensue.
- Absolutely abhorrent beliefs about race.
- Absolutely abhorrent practices involving race, including killing six million people based on who their parents were.
- The creepy science they were involved in, meaning who knows what kind of horrors they had waiting in the wings.
- Their effectiveness. Nazis were very, very effective soldiers. Intelligent, motivated, well-trained... fighting a Nazi was a tough proposition. So therefore, killing one was an achievement.

I sometimes wonder if we'll see the kind of fanaticism and organisation the Nazis brought ever again. I hope not. But then I remember that history always repeats, and what might seem like an impossibility will one day seem very possible to a generation of people. I guess the world has changed since the 1930s, when it was clearly a good time to be a dictator. These days I guess the young dictator types are running middle-management and playing hacked versions of Call of Duty online.

Chapter 83: Reflections on Time and a Bottle

Several weeks ago, now, there was a column in the New York Times that I kept here in a draft, intending to write about it. But I'm sure the sardonic stuff I would have "scribbled" here isn't what I'm writing now. Not that I don't feel the same way, I just don't feel that way ... now.

The Proof column, which is among those being sliced due to cost-cutting measures, is about alcohol and American life: a worthy topic of discussion, particularly in pubs and especially with intelligent people who can extemporize without spilling anything on the nicely lacquered bartop. But I'm writing this at about 7 a.m., after an evening in which the screams of babies literally drove me to drink — not much, and only after I'd gotten them in a safe place with their mother.

The article by Tim Kreider, which feels less like an op-ed piece and more like an essay in a men's magazine, still keeps me thinking. There are a couple lines I particularly like: "I don't feel middle aged — I just feel like I’ve been young a lot longer than most people" and "I’m a little appalled at all the time I’ve lost, but then, wasting time wasn’t exactly an unforeseen side effect; it was part of the fun. Of course it was; if drinking wasn’t so much fun it wouldn’t be such a widespread and terrible problem." And this is a classic: "As my metabolism started to slow down the fun-to-hangover ratio became increasingly unfavorable."

Truer comments may never have been written, and it takes a middle-age wastrel to write them. I'm not passing any judgement on this guy; it's quite possible he's accomplished more than I have. Indeed, he's got a column in the New York Times. And I'm fairly certain his words have found more readers than mine have — so far.

This man is approximately one full year older than I am. It seems to have taken him, perhaps, ten-twelve years more than it took me to realize that drinking like college kids isn't really much fun any more. And yes, it is "any less" fun. Neither is this blog piece a public pledge to quit drinking; such proclamations are only needed for those who want to be anonymous, and they know not to make public pledges — just private confirmations or acknowledgements.

Rather, I think of this as another morning, children fed and sleeping, cats fed and sleeping, wife unfed and sleeping, in which I don't have to say to myself, "My God, what have I done?"

Links and boat people

I was thinking about talking about the boat people issue, but decided against it. Basically because I think it's pretty clear the change in policy has directly influenced the number of boats coming our way.

So what's to talk about? Eventually Rudd will a) return to Howard's policies (which is how he got elected in the first place), b) find some sort of middle ground that makes it harder for people smugglers to get here, or c) resign himself to the fact we'll probably see another SIEV-X and a few hundred more deaths.

So instead, some links!

Lifestyles of the Rich & the Famous - loving gorgeous "little thing" Harlow Winter Kate

I just HAD to post this image of Harlow Winter Kate Madden - gorgeous baby daughter of Nicole Ritchie & Joel Madden. She reminds me alot of Lulu at that age - minus the carrot top of course! I am pretty sure the outfit is Bonpoint as it carries the same check as their Anshuli Dark Violet Plaid Tunic but if anyone has the exact fashion details, please let me know as I just love, love, love it!
