Are You Planning a Spooky Halloween?

My son always dressed up in something gross for Halloween. When I look back I am surprised at some of the things I let him do. I actually made him a Freddy Krueger costume. I must have been nuts!

Now that I am a grandmother, I realize that different children seem to be able to handle different things and situations. I have found that not all children can distinguish between fantasy and reality.

These are some great costumes that are spooky but not scary.

Sorry this item has been sold out.
This bat costume is too cute! Your little one will be so spooky.

Adorable little Frankenstein costume. Top quality detailed baby costume is crafted from quality materials and detailed with appliqué.

My younger brother decided to take my son to see a movie called “Basket Case” when he was three years old. When they entered the movie they were passing out surgical masks for everyone to wear. These were to prevent the blood from splattering off the screen and all over your face. I was horrified, but my son never suffered any damage from this.

Zombieland Movie Opens to Rave Reviews!

Zombie flicks are always a cult hit among fans, but the latest zombie-lovers treat is also getting rave reviews from critics as well!

Zombieland opens in theaters this Friday, but it already has an excellent 91% rating on RottenTomatoes.com.

It looks hilariously funny, while still remaining true to the zombie gore and effects.

Here's the Zombieland movie trailer, if you haven't seen it yet, check it out - it's sure to go down in zombie history as a legend!

I'm sure that this movie might peak some interest in zombie costumes for this Halloween. AnniesCostumes carries quite a few different zombie type costumes, and we also feature a full line of theatrical makeup, just like the pros use at www.StageandTheaterMakeup.com for all your zombie makeup needs!

The Glory of Rome

I can kinda understand why Americans think Europeans are weird sometimes.

Take this week. Roman Polanski, a wanted fugitive who skipped bail after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual contact with a minor (the charge was downgraded from rape due to a plea bargain - he still actually raped her), is finally arrested and will be extradited to face justice in America.

I've covered court cases where pedophile priests have been prosecuted for crimes committed 30 years ago. Surprisingly though, there was no outcry from the French government. And no outraged reports from commentators, calling for their release. "Free the 70-year-old priest who raped boys! It was so long ago!"

No, there was widespread media coverage condemning the men for their actions.

The Deceiver has a really good article explaining the circumstances surrounding Polanski's arrest and flight from justice. And this article about how the HuffingtonPost published a slew of reports defending Polanski, only to get slayed by their readers in the comments, is good too. Here is some info:
During a photo shoot in the Los Angeles home of Jack Nicholson (who was not present), Polanski took nude photos of the resistant girl after giving her champagne and qualudes, and then raped and sodomized her. Polanski was charged with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, and lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14. He made a plea bargain, and the charge was reduced to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
I'm no legal expert, although I have had some training. And in my considered opinion, that is some bad s*** right there. Some indefensible s***.

A lot of people are making themselves look stupid over this. People writing columns saying he shouldn't be extradited, he's paid his penalty etc etc. My favourite is a woman named Anne Applebaum, who writes for the Washington Post. She wrote a passionate defence of Polanski, but failed to point out that her husband is the Polish ambassador to the USA, and he is actively campaigning for Polanski's release. It would have been fair to her readers to mention that fact. Anyway, when it got pointed out, she said she had no idea her husband was involved... even though she had already linked to a story in which her husband was quoted on the issue. Stupid.

Or there's Whoopi Goldberg on The View, where she expressed the difference between "rape" and "rape-rape". Hmmm... Whoopi... let's just hear those charges again:
Polanski was charged with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, and lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14.
I don't know about you, but that seems to fit both of Whoopi's "rape" and "rape-rape" definitions.

More than 100 movie industry figures have signed a petition asking for his release. They include Martin Scorcese, Woody Allen, David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Pedro Almodovar, Tilda Swinton and Monica Bellucci. Well, Woody Allen I understand. But the rest of them? I'm surprised they're cool with rape-rape of 13-year-old girls.

Anyway, back to the Europeans. The French are apparently way cool with rape-rape, and are all up in America's grill about this.
Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand both sharply criticised US and Swiss authorities over the arrest, which came as the Franco-Polish director arrived in Zurich to receive an award. Mr Kouchner branded the Oscar-winner's arrest "sinister" and Mr Mitterrand said it was "absolutely dreadful" that the case should return to haunt the Oscar winner so long after the offence. Mr Kouchner said: "This affair is frankly a bit sinister ... Here is a man of such talent, recognised worldwide, recognised especially in the country where he was arrested. This is not nice at all."

Speaking of "not nice":
Polanski took nude photos of the resistant girl after giving her champagne and qualudes, and then raped and sodomized her.
What if Polanski was a 44-year-old vagrant at the time? Who then skipped bail? Or what if he was a 44-year-old priest? Or a 44-year-old stepdad of the girl? Or a 44-year-old lawyer?

Luckily for him he was a 44-year-old film director.

His actions were indefensible. The reaction of some countries and some high profile journalists and directors to his arrest is also indefensible. They should hang their heads and be called to account to explain their position.

UPDATE
More links: great article from Salon.com, which includes some absolutely indefensible comments from the HuffingtonPost (this article).
And this one from TimesOnline, about the way the French media portray Polanski.
Another of the HuffPo articles that caused so much controversy... another one... another one...
I wonder how they would have felt had this man been a movie director???

A New Nightmare on Elm Street - Movie Trailer

Does Elm Street really need a new nightmare? Can this movie actually be redone better than the original sans Robert Englund? What are your thoughts?
Check out the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie trailer, just released, and let us know what you think!

A Nightmare on Elm Street in HD

Every year since 2003, Extreme Halloween has surveyed visitors asking "What is the most Extreme Scary movie villain?" And for 4 years running, even among new horror movie legends like Creeper from Jeeper's Creepers and Jigsaw from SAW, good ole' Freddy has led the pack in survey after survey, year afte year.

So that brings me to the question: Does a movie that has stood the test of time for more than 25 years need to be re-made? Will you be seeing the new movie when it is released in theaters April 30, 2010? Did the original movie make you lose some sleep? I know I lost some sleep, fo sure!

Get me to school on time!

My granddaughter wakes up from her nap just before we have to run out the door to pick up her brother from school. I try to have her at least half dressed, or have her clothes laid out beside her. Once she was so tired that I picked her up while she was still in her pajamas, grabbed  the clothes beside her, and put her in the car. I figured if we had to get out I would have her clothes.

Looking at this dress I realized that it would be perfect to put on her before she took her nap. When she woke up she would be ready to put on her shoes and head out the door.

This dress would be very convenient if you were going out at night. Just bathed your daughter, and put this dress on her. When you come home brush her teeth, wash her hands, and tuck her in bed. This dress makes a great night gown.

I like the idea that it is a simple A-line dress with nothing that would poke her while she was sleeping.

Megan Fox on SNL

We need to get a few things sorted out about Megan Fox. I have finally figured out that she is kind of stupid and not funny. The only reason she is on the big and little screens is because she knows how to look hot. With that being said, she was on Saturday Night Live this past weekend and was terrible, but was still hot. She wins!

Sigma 2 now or later...

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 for PS3 comes out this week and the internal debating has started whether to pick it up now or later. Pre-ordering from GameStop will net a costume for Ryu and an art book and CD for an extra $10. I was not wowed by the previous CE for Sigma PS3 although this package looks much better.

Guess it all comes down to time and I'm still a long way from finishing Muramasa and messing around with Beatles RockBand.
I downloaded the demo for Sigma 2 over the weekend and will try to play it tonight to see if it helps make up my mind.

There are some very cool comparison shots of the 360 and PS3 versions here. Some of it is lighting, but it's obvious the texture work is much improved.

Welcome to the Wild West

I spent some time in Texas while I was growing up with my uncles, aunts, cousins and other family and friends. We all had a hunting lodge with bunk beds. During the day we would go out and walk forever in the woods. (I can’t tell you how many cowgirl boots I’ve had in my lifetime, but my oldest brother still wears them.)  Our adventures were amazing!

When I was a teenager I dressed up like an Indian for Halloween. I had long hair so I braided it. When I saw this costume I thought this would have been perfect. I could have worn it for Halloween, out to dinner, to a party, or a dance. Wearing this to a dance would be fun because of the full twirlly skirt.

This faux suede skirt set is 100% polyester. The full skirt has a fringed hem with an elastic waist, drop yoke, and full twirly skirt. The matching long sleeve tee has fringe across the front, and half fringed sleeves. Looks great with boots!

Back on my grind

So I start work tomorrow. It's going to be good to be back at it after more than a year out of full time work. I managed to pick up a fair bit of freelance stuff in that time, which was good, but there's nothing quite like going to work every day and knowing you have a job!

I'm not sure what's going to happen with this blog. I'll still update it when I can, but it won't be as regularly. I've done 327 posts in just over a year. Not heaps by some standards, but more than I'd expected.

I think I've managed to keep my skills up to the point where I'm not worried about stepping straight back into a newspaper environment. It'll be good to be interviewing and breaking stories again.

Earning proper money again will be nice too! I think I want a big-ass TV. And a new computer. Oh, to consume again! It's been so long!

I'll try to get back to Hobart a lot. It will be easier than Burnie was. I might actually make it to Burnie too to visit some friends. Maybe hit Maginty's on a Friday for some nostalgia.

Anyway, thanks for reading, I hope you keep reading, and I'll try to provide interesting content.

Here are some random things:
- Drawings of Missed Connections in New York. Funny and pretty.
- "My parents were awesome" tumblr. I think everyone's parents had more of a life than we all realise.
- The Most Controversial Magazine Covers ever.

Muramasa GET!

My experience with Odin Sphere informed me that a guide with maps of the levels will be very handy to have and it has proved true so far.

The flow of the game is much better than OS. As far as I know, there are no alternate costumes in the game, but the art direction and overall visual punch clearly put this in the CosGet wheelhouse.

I plan on picking up Ninja Gaiden Sigma II next so it'll be a back-to-back dose of ninja action.

My Grandson’s Birthday

Today is my grandson’s birthday. He is now 6 years old.

It doesn’t seem fair that he had to go to school today, but they did have a party for him so I’m sure he had fun.

Tonight we will have a dinner, and his party, at his great-grandmothers. Lots of food, family, presents, cake and ice cream.

This is not my grandson, but what you think of the new hat I got for his birthday?

Boy’s blue birthday hat looks like a birthday cake! How silly and fun is this for a birthday celebration? Soft fabric covered foam hat has colorful birthday candles on top, and plastic Happy Birthday decorations on front of hat. Approx. 8.5 inches tall from brim to top of candles. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
