Super Classic Costume Pack

Took some quick snaps of the costumes last nigh. The two highlights are Blanka and Fei Long. Does anyone know what Dhalsim's outfit is supposed to pay tribute to? Right now I'm not feeling it too much.

The Fei Long outfit is just ridiculously awesome. It's the Bruce Lee "Kato" outfit from Green Hornet. You always see people use the yellow jumpsuit to pay homage so this is a nice alternate.

Christina Aguilera's new video

Here you go folks, this was released at midnight today! The highly anticipated video for "Not Myself Tonight." Alot of people are mad that she apparently took some of Lady Gaga's image away. I could care less really. I remember 7 years ago when Christina was hot and doing her own thing WAY before Lady Gaga. Maybe it is Lady Gaga who took the image away from Christina? HMMMMMMM......there's a thought. Anyway, enjoy. The Video is Rated PG-17 BTW lol.

The Best Youth Ministry in America: Homeschool Speech & Debate Clubs

A subtle, spiritual revival has been stirring in the United States for over two decades now. It is the Christian Homeschool Movement. More and more parents are catching the vision for biblical discipleship, for evangelism, and for servant leadership. And from within this movement has arisen, in my opinion, the best youth ministry in America today: speech and debate clubs. That’s right, I said speech and debate clubs.

Speech and debate clubs are popping up around the country like dandelions in a summer lawn. These clubs are an expression of a percolating passion for biblical apologetics, for persuasive speech and for skillful argumentation. They provide a potent blend of academic rigor, engaging peer relationships, and high-amp, adrenaline experiences that come from public speaking. They are Christ-centered, Bible-enriched, skills-oriented, age-blended, and parent-supervised. They are family-integrated and multi-generational. I just had to throw in a couple more hyphenated combos. Homeschool speech and debate clubs are superior to the average Christian youth ministry model in almost every way. Perhaps I’m a bit biased.

My family has been in involved in speech and debate for six years now. Each of my five children has been a competitor in the NCFCA League (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association) and loved it. They have benefited from the research, writing, revising and rehearsing that goes into preparing and delivering a speech. They have also benefited from getting to know other Christian homeschool families from around the country who attend the tournaments.

We started our own club, Clarion Forensics, back in 2005 with just four families. By 2007 we had grown to over twenty families. That’s when we began hosting our own tournaments. Then, in 2009 we divided into two separate clubs, and began meeting in different towns. And next year a third club will begin meeting in yet another town nearby.

When I hear young Christians speak articulately on issues of interest and importance, my worldview opinions turn a shade brighter. My optimism in the future of my country is restored. From such as these will arise the husbands and wives, the fathers and mothers, the businessmen, churchmen and statesmen to lead our communities and our nation in the next generation.

If you’re not quite ready to join a speech club right now, then hear me out for another few hundred words of pointed persuasion. Below I offer six essential reasons, along with some scriptural encouragement, for why your family should get involved in a speech and debate club.

1. For Christ – You will purposefully join with others to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:16-17).

2. For Communication - You will be coached to speak articulately and effectively.

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2).

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).

3. For Companionship – You will develop close friendships with other individuals and families of like mind.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil” (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Proverbs 13:20).

4. For Competition – You will work hard to sharpen your communication skills through engaging contest.

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

“The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him” Proverbs 18:17).

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24).

5. For Character Development You will learn to be an example to others, growing in humility and gaining the ability to give and receive instruction.

“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).

6. For the Great Commission – You will serve as a disciple-making ambassador for Christ.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13).

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

In conclusion, start homeschooling your children and get them involved with the nearest speech and debate club. Link up with other disciple-making, world-changing ambassadors for Christ. Be an active participant in America's best, family-integrated youth ministry. You'll be blessed to watch your children learn to speak the truth with skill and grace. You'll make memories that will last a lifetime.

Some reading for everyone

Some of you may not have read Animal Farm. I myself haven't read it in many years (at least 10, I think). I pledge here and now to re-read it (thanks to Mak for giving me Orwell's Complete Works a while back:). Christopher Hitchens (he of the often ridiculous opinions) has written an excellent piece looking at it.

A group of Ukrainian and Polish socialists, living in refugee camps in post-war Europe, discovered a copy of the book in English and found it to be a near-perfect allegory of their own recent experience. ... "They were profoundly affected by such scenes as that of animals singing 'Beasts of England' on the hill . . . They very vividly reacted to the 'absolute' values of the book." ... It is affecting to imagine battle-hardened ex-soldiers and prisoners of war, having survived all the privations of the eastern front, becoming stirred by the image of British farm animals singing their own version of the discarded "Internationale", but this was an early instance of the hold the book was to take on its readership.
He makes a good point about the regimes in the world who still ban the book. Including China, Burma, Iran and other Islamic countries. It's really quite strange to think about how many places still ban ideas. It seems so natural to us to be able to read whatever we like, even if it criticises our leaders or system of government. Western democracy really is great, people!
Thus far, Animal Farm has not been legally published in China, Burma or the moral wilderness of North Korea, but one day will see its appearance in all three societies, where it is sure to be greeted with the shock of recognition that it is still capable of inspiring.

People criticise British footballers all the time for their behaviour. Most of that is justified. But here is a great speech from Frank Lampard when he won the 2005 Player of the Year Award. Chelsea had just won the title under Jose Mourinho and Lampard stepped up to a new level as a player. His speech was so surprisingly good that The Observer published it in full the next day.
A lot of the reason I am here is because of my strength, my determination and character. I would just like to talk about a girl called Lucy.
I went to her funeral today, she was 10 years old. She came to the game against Charlton where we lifted the Premiership trophy. She had a tumour on the brain - really she should have died the week before that game. But she was so desperate to come and see that game, to watch us play. The character and strength she showed made me put everything in perspective.
I would like to dedicate this whole award to her, her family, especially her mother, and I would like to say thanks to everyone tonight. Thank you.

Behind the Seams: The San Francisco Junior League Fashion Show Luncheon

How does Fab spend a Spring Saturday? By attending fashion shows whenever and wherever I can. When I'm not in New York or LA for my runway fix, I look to my local (beautiful) city of San Francisco for fashion fare. True, there is no groundbreaking trends and top models on the runways, but there are events that benefit good causes and healthy models who actually look like they're having fun. Such was the scene at the Junior League of San Francisco fashion show luncheon. PartySugar and I gobbled down creative salad fixings while we looked on to a high-energy Macy's sponsored runway show.

junior fashion
To read more about my Fab Saturday and to see more fun runway pics, read more.
The theme was American Beauty and there were various segments broken down by trend. There was even a mens and kiddie segment. One of the highlights was actually the preteen show where I felt like a junior higher again, though back then I didn't get to wear Marc by Marc Jacobs. The models were a mix of women who are involved with the fund-raising organization and real models, the husbands of Junior Leaguers and their kids. It was a family affair.
It was also a very well rounded fashion show in that there were looks for women of all ages and shapes — another thing we don't get to see much of on high-fashion runways. Some of my favorite looks were by DKNY, Kensie, and Chaiken (the guest designer who took her walk on the runway despite being in a foot cast), and specifically an L-Space raspberry bikini and a BCBG ivory Grecian gown. The event itself was well produced and the stage, complete with theme-changing giant hanging balls, was wonderful.
Proceeds from the fashion show — including some fabulous auctioned European vacations — all go to JLSF-supported community programs. You know I love me some fashion for a cause!

Bango the Buck

I must say the mascot for the Bucks,"Bango" has to be the coolest man deer I have ever seen. Good thing he has the deer suit on, otherwise he is most likely the biggest gymnastics dork ever and should be made fun of. The deer suit is what makes him cool, I wanna see the guy behind the suit do it and see the response he gets.

It still cannot top mascot eating a cheerleader

My Brower Vine 2010

This Brower Vine was started from seed about 2 1/2 years ago. It will makes seed pods with thousands of seeds. I took several seeds and started them in small pots. As they got larger I moved them into a larger pot. When they were about a foot tall I planted them in the ground on each side of my front porch. The one on the NW side of the house started off well, and bloomed and bloomed. I live in Florida, and the one in this picture was planted on the NE side of the house. The first year it didn't do very well, but now it seems to be quite happy.

My Amaryllis Flowers 2010

I really love flowers! These amaryllis bulbs were planted about 2 1/2 years ago.
Originally I purchased three packages of three different color amaryllis flowers. Each package had three bulbs. So I started off with nine bulbs. When I dug them up to move them to this flower bed I had about 50 bulbs. This year 50 flowering stalks came up and bloomed at once. There are still more stalks coming up! I live in SW Florida, and have these planted on the NE side of the house.

SHOUTS AND MURMURS

THIS IN ONE IN A SERIES BY UPDIKE AND GOREY

I  came across this book just by accident while looking for some Halloween and Christmas stuff.  I thought the title
was very amusing.   This is one in a series of books written by John Updike and the drawings done by Edward Gorey.  (What a name for an illustrator).  I am going to give you short exerpts of  the TWELVE TERRORS OF CHRISTMAS.

  1. Santa:  The man.  Describes his loose-fitting beard, his alcoholic smell, and compares him to one of Steven King's clowns.

  2. Santa: The concept.  Questions why anyone would live at the North Pole.

  3. Santa's Helpers.  Asks why anyone would work in sweatshop conditions without getting something out of it.

  4. O Tannenbaum.  What happens if the tree  falls over?

  5. Tiny Reindeer.  The hooves cut through the shingles on the roof and their fur could be full of bugs.

  6. Electrocution.  Not only do you have to watch out for the lights, but also for all of the electronic games.

  7. The Carols.  They boom from public audio systems, yet our hearts are still heavy.

  8. The Specials.  Talks about the annoying television specials that invade the channels.

  9. Fear of Not Giving Enough.  Leads to dizziness in shopping malls.

  10. Fear of Not Receiving enough.   Leads to anxious scanning of U.P.S. deliveries.

  11. Fear of Returns.  The humiliation that comes with it all.

  12. The Dark.  How early it gets dark outside, and how creepy everyone looks as they walk by the lit-up windows of the department store.
It isn't a very long book, only 32 pages.  I have seen it priced anywhere  from a little less than $2.00 up to $10.00.  It's well worth it, even if it's just for the illustrations.  Take a look at the other books by Edward Gorey too and let me know what you think.

- The US to build a hypersonic missile that can hit anywhere on Earth in an hour.
White House officials confirmed last week that the president, who won the Nobel peace prize last year, is considering the deployment of a new class of hypersonic guided missiles that can reach their targets at speeds of Mach 5 — about 3,600mph.
That is nearly seven times faster than the 550mph Tomahawk cruise missiles that arrived too late to kill Bin Laden at an Al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan in 1998.

They suffer the fatal flaw of being too smug to bear. There is a global resistance, not to the facts, but to environmentalists. It appears most of us would rather fry, drown or starve than be told what to do by a bearded git in sandals, and that’s a rather comforting and cussedly human truth.
 - A religious skeptic explains why her family joined a church.

Our family just joined a church.
This may not sound like a radical statement -- not here in America, arguably the churchiest nation in the world. But hearing these words from my own mouth feels about as natural as, "I've just joined the Marines."
- Awesome Star Wars his and hers tshirts.
- An interesting quote from 1995 about the extent to which we will rely on devices like mobiles, laptops, GPS, and iPods.
“[As] machines become more and more intelligent, people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones. Eventually a stage may be reached at which the decisions necessary to keep the system running will be so complex that human beings will be incapable of making them intelligently. At that stage the machines will be in effective control. People won’t be able to just turn the machines off, because they will be so dependent on them that turning them off would amount to suicide.”
As you may have guessed, that quote was from Ted Kaczynski. The Unabomber.

House of Dereon : Famous Clothing Brand of Beyonce Knowles and her mom Tina Knowles.

The Best Women’s Clothing Fashion Brands

Executive Summary about Clothing Brand by Henry Jeon
Are you looking for best women clothing fashion brands? To make the search easy for you we have listed the top most women clothing fashion brands. Most of the brands represent urban clothing brands, many of them were even founded by many hip hop artists.
The brands by the hip hop artists offer most interesting lines of clothes, their creativity and love for hip clothes is easily reflected in their clothes. Some of the renowned brands having distinctive women line clothing are Apple Bottoms, House of Dereon, and Phat.
Apple Bottoms: An apple bottom is a very special brand designed and founded by none other than an American hip-hop artist Nelly. She restricted her clothing line only for women and marketed it extensively all over the country. The demand for Apple Bottoms is huge and the reason is not all brands take out clothes for fat women. Anybody starting a women clothes outlet should not think twice before asking the wholesaler to send them bundles of Apple Bottom latest designs.
House of Dereon and Dereon: owned by Beyonce Knowles and her mother Tina Knowles, both the mother and daughter started with their line of women clothing with the intention of paying tribute to Tina Knowles mother Agnes Dereon.
Baby Phat: Baby Phat is a sister concerned company of Phat Farm, an urban clothing line. It doesn’t only manufacture and market women’s line of clothes but also makes fabulous jewelry and shoes.

Wholesale Branded Clothes – Where Can You Get Discount Branded Clothes?

Executive Summary about Clothing Brand by Michelle Samual Williams
You need a reliable wholesale supplier whose merchandise can be obtained at the best and lowest price possible. If you are selling wholesale branded clothes, you have to source out suppliers who can provide these clothes at very low prices.
Branded clothes practically sell themselves. Customers are assured of their superior quality and design. You can check out the wholesale directories on eBay or similar online market sites to locate wholesalers of branded clothes. Occasionally, they will have a special discount sale where these clothes are sold at rock bottom prices, up to 70% off the retail prices. Before new styles come out, wholesalers usually sell off their current stocks at bargain prices. Take advantage of this to stock up on cheap branded clothes.
Brand name clothes can also be obtained from manufacturers at very low prices for items which are slightly damaged or did not pass quality control. Take the time to browse and find wholesale suppliers of branded clothes. You will easily find many selling discounted clothing lots. These lots are usually priced at around 30% of the retail price. They usually contain assorted brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Timberland, and others. Even if you sell them at prices well below the original price, you will still make a big profit.

Women’s jacket: Ruffles are back in fashion

women's clothing fashion
Ruffles are back, with the acceptance of the great garments and accessories. This acceptance is well-known by fashion experts.
In United States, some fashion stores (such as Jcrew) already have these jackets in different styles, which can be used to stylize your body.
The best option for this sunny season is to wear these jackets with some tight jeans. If those jeans  are flared, then your appearance will be much better, because this will create an optical illusion giving the impression that your hips are much bigger than your waist and for that reason, you will look great.
Try wearing these jackets with open toe high heels. The ruffles give your clothes a more traditional appearance and these jackets match perfectly with shoes that have the same color.

Happy about that

Yes, the Girls Aloud singer and technically still-wife of Ashley Cole, Cheryl Cole is gorgeous. So why would he cheat on her??? I have no idea, but clearly he is stupid. Great player though. Definitely one of the top three left backs in the world (Evra and Lahm probably the other two).

As for Cheryl in a towel turban, no luck sorry. But here she is in a German peasant-style top, which I think we can all agree is lovely.

huxley "essay and novel" quote
I don't have the exact quote, but in this post I mention that Aldous Huxley wanted to find the perfect balance between essay and novel.

martine mccutcheon weight
This was one of the main things I didn't like about Love, Actually. The other thing was watching Tim from The Office constantly getting it on while I was watching the film with my parents. But I digress. I didn't like how they kept saying Martine's character (the Prime Minister's office lady) was overweight. She really wasn't. Not even close. But several characters made reference to it, and it was stupid. Google search her if you want to know how "fat" she is.

what magical skills does dane swan have
Well, first of all he has an amazing ability to get the football a lot. He uses it pretty well, despite not having the kicking range of Nathan Buckley. Swan was an absolute steal in the 2001 draft, and would have gone top 6 if people had known how he would turn out. He also has the magical ability to get lots of tattoos on one arm. I guess that's magical.

who will win sits in bradon and denison
Looking at that, I'm guessing a student has been given an assignment looking at the Tasmanian state election... and somehow found my blog. Spelling correctly would have helped. I went out to a school for a story a while back and this kid was trying to find which country Paris was in. But he kept misspelling everything he put into Google so it never showed up. And he had no idea that that was why he wasn't getting the results. I wanted to step in and say something, but it wasn't my place. Poor dude.

tim riggins damaged
He sure is. Poor Riggins. He has it rough. Except for being incredibly good looking, great at football and irresistable to women. He actually has it tough though. Poor Riggins.

No doubt. Post here confirms it.

grant birchall naked
SERIOUSLY??? Who is doing all these searches for Grant Birchall??? I mentioned him maybe twice on this blog and the girlfriend searches started showing up. Now they want him naked??? Poor dude! Leave him alone!

There was also a really icky search that I won't repeat here because I don't want anyone else who likes that kind of thing coming here.

Human rights?

Good news, everyone! We're not getting a Charter of Human Rights.

Why is this good news? Well, from the research I've done, the reasons to have one are:
1) There may be some areas of human rights in Australia that aren't completely, explicitly covered in detail by the various laws, commissions, panels and conventions.
2) Other countries have them, so we should too.

The reasons against?
1) There would be a significant shift in power away from elected representatives and towards the judiciary.
2) The main beneficiaries of a human rights charter? Lawyers. Specifically, human rights lawyers.
3) A Charter takes away the Parliament's ability to make policy reflective of the will of the people.

I think it's interesting that the people campaigning hardest for a Human Rights Charter in Australia are... human rights lawyers. They've been pushing for something that will give them more work for years. I wish I could get the Government to do an inquiry into possibly creating more jobs for reporters! We should have a Charter of Better Writing that makes it illegal to write a document without getting it checked and edited by a trained journalist. More work for me! Yay! Uh, I mean... this is a completely unbiased and impartial opinion.

Anyway here are the arguments for and against the cases:
For the Charter, by Professor Sarah Joseph, director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash University.
Against the Charter, by former NSW Premier Bob Carr.

Can you imagine if we enshrined stuff in the Charter that we couldn't change later?? Like in America how they let everyone carry weapons. Now the culture is irrevocably broken. What kind of dumb things would we put in a charter today that would be ridiculous in 200 years?

Super tired

About to finish day nine of nine days on in a row. Been super busy. My schedule is: six on, two off, nine on, two off, five on.

If you need something to read, check out Dr Harry's blog. He has some good posts and links to a great article about how gangsta rap doesn't represent the reality of living on "the streets".

Also, Kick Ass was good. Very violent and crude, yes, but a lot of fun. And with a bit of an emotional heart, surprisingly.

Hair care products: what are the benefits of bees wax in your hair?

Beeswax is a very natural substance that contains beneficial properties found in items such as lotions, ointments, creams, lip balms, lipsticks, pharmaceutical products, polishes, candles, soaps, and cosmetic products
. Its many benefits can especially be found in a variety of consumer hair care products.

To better understand the advantages of using beeswax for your hair management, it is first necessary to examine its physical properties. The basic properties of beeswax found in its original state include compounds such as hydrocarbons, esters, 3-hydroxyflavone, and free alcohols and acids. The bees that create it are referred to as the worker bees and they actually build this substance from the secretion of their glands. The worker bees then shape these particular secretions into what is more commonly known to most of us as the honeycomb. The end product of the refined waxes that are eventually produced can be usually seen in the colors of yellow and white.

There are many wide-ranging benefits found in the use of beeswax for hair care products. One benefit is the beeswax can provide a very pleasant and sweet fragrance. Another benefit is it can act as an emulsifier and it can make the hair much stronger and much thicker. Beeswax can also can build-up the volume of your hair in order to provide for a more improved control and texture to your hair particular style.

Beeswax can give an additional shine and glossy appearance to your hair and offer extra protection for your hair. The presence of its wax coating and its antioxidants can protect the hair from harm and damage created from everyday environmental factors and conditions.

The substance of beeswax can give added lubrication, moisture, hydration, and softness to your hair. It is considered to be a very safe, hypoallergenic, and natural ingredient to apply to both your hair and scalp. Only a little amount of beeswax is needed to help add the necessary volume, thickness, strength, and luster.

One of the important advantages to selecting beeswax for styling solutions is it can be easily mixed with many other ingredients. It will still retain its unique properties when combined in different mixtures.

The types of hair products found containing beeswax include hair styling balms and pomades, emulsifiers, and volume, hold, and brilliantine solutions. These products offer sweet scents and aromas, shine and gloss, styling, emulsifying, and volumizing aids. It has numerous helpful and applicable uses for hair care products and enhancers due to its protective and beneficial features. Additionally, beeswax is thought of as both a natural and safe product to use.

You can find beeswax packaged by itself for its sole contribution to your hairstyle management. You can also find the substance of beeswax combined with other compatible ingredients such as olive oil or almond oil. Whether it is to be used in its original source or whether it is to be used in combination with other helpful substances, beeswax can be of benefit to and complement your hair conditioning and styling in a variety of ways.

Skincare tips to help minimize product induced irritations

Whether young or young-at-heart, male or female, irritations on your face sometimes come with obvious signs such as redness, rashes, and blotches. But, symptoms such as overactive oil glands, blemishes and dried-up skin cells are also common irritation signs that you might be ignoring. In fact, you might be treating a blemish or oily skin with more of the same irritants making matters worse. These irritations can impair your skin’s immune ability, cause inflammation and accelerate the aging
process; and no one wants that. Steer clear of these short and long term sufferings with a few of these strategies.

Read the ingredients of the products applied to your face. Don’t stop at the front of the bottle with its claims of wonder, turn it around and read just as you would read the labels on the food you eat. Terms such as “hypoallergenic” and “noncomedogenic” are not regulated by any government agencies and can be used by manufacturers without guidance; so learn to trust only you. Opt for products that have simple formulas because they lower the chance of irritation. Fragrances, though nice and a great selling point, are one of the primary culprits of irritation. Don’t be fooled by a product that seems to have no scent, sometimes the chemicals used in the product’s formula are so unappealing that a neutralizing fragrance is added. Also, stay away from products that have a high content of alcohol, usually listed as the first or second ingredient. Alcohol cleans and disinfects but dries out all skin types.

Know the exceptions to the ingredients rule; there are some inherently irritating chemicals that can be good for you. Alphahydroxy acids, preservatives and tretinoin (a form of Vitamin A) can bring benefits to your skin. If you have sensitive skin, place a small amount of a product with these exceptions on the inside of your wrist and don’t wipe it off – allow it sit. If an irritation doesn’t occur such as redness, swelling or itching, the product will probably be fine for your face. Purchase a small quantity and be cautious.

Keep your skin hydrated with a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer – all skin types.

Many people, especially those with oily or combination skin, feel that harsh cleansing of their skin will “dry” out the problem areas. However, over cleaning your skin simply strips it of moisture and destroys the protective barrier. This opens the gates to bacteria that can get into pores and create blemishes or rashes. After gently cleaning your face of the daily grime, makeup and/or sweat, add moisturizer. Even oily or combination skin types will benefit. For dry skin types or those who face the cold weather, moisturize throughout the day. In addition, drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water does hydrate your body inside and out and helps purge irritants from your skin.

Keep an eye on your antioxidants. Free radical oxidants are molecules that invade your skin and kill skin cells; this can cause inflammation, dry skin and early aging. You can’t stop the free radicals as they come from the environment; a puff of cigarette smoke, or chemicals in food and water. But a simple antioxidant, such as a multi-vitamin with A, C and E is great at neutralizing these oxidants.

Your face and smile are the first impression of how wonderful you can be – take the time and make an effort to take care of your skin and it will reward you for years to come.

Chapter 85.2: A Song in My Heart and Head (in Praise of Teachers)

I try not to write too much here about my kids, but lately their music has meandered through my brain a lot. Silly songs, educational songs, songs that should never be played to anyone over the age of three...

But as my girls graduated from the Baby Einstein videos to Sesame Street and Barney, I noticed something shocking: I knew some of these songs! Sure, there were standards like The People in Your Neighborhood and Rubber Ducky. But there was also one about lady bugs that I'd completely forgotten about.

I asked a co-worker what shows she remembered from her childhood. She was born to one of those families that didn't believe in television for many years, so she hadn't seen too much. But as she thought about it, she remembered seeing Barney. To this day, she said, she hums a song about cleaning up as she washes the dishes.

I've always had a thing for songs and song lyrics. I've entertained/pissed off people by singing the lyrics to a shortlived show from the late '70s called Hello Larry, which starred McLean Stevenson, after he left MASH. Long after I composed songs in my head as I walked to school as a kindergartner, I would find music offered me the first entree to a world of creativity.

It pains me to see the arts decimated in public education. I hate to hear about teachers losing their jobs or ridiculed by people who've never tried to teach that they get paid too much. Teaching children is perhaps the most important job in the world. Those that do it should be continually trained to do it better, and classrooms should be kept at relatively small sizes so that children receive the attention they need and deserve — which means that more teachers are necessary.

I know people will disagree with me. I've heard the arguments. Sometimes, those people make excellent points. But if it weren't for my parents and my teachers, I'd not have been able to succeed in the ways that I have.
