When I get the chance, I like to listen to music. For many years, I wrote music and lyrics, and I always feel like I can pretty much jump back into it at any moment even though I know my guitar muscles need to get back in shape. These days, most of the music I hear is sung by, to, or with a muppet, so I'm not sure I should attempt to write any music at the moment unless I'm ready to get heckled by two-year-olds.
But a song that still catches my attention is one that Dave Matthews came out with a couple years ago: Funny the Way It Is. In essence, it's about perspective. He describes children playing in the park on a beautiful sunny day; their cries of joy become mixed with the sound of a fire engine's siren and he reflects on how someone's home is burning down "on a day like this."
I especially love the lyric: Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's heart is broken, it becomes your favorite song.
I've written songs like that. The lyrics just ring so true.
Although I didn't hear the song this morning, it's one of the things that crossed my mind after hearing about my train being delayed this morning. Apparently in the early morning hours of the day soon ending, a person "trespassed" onto the tracks and was struck by a train. Hours later, trains were still delayed. I got into my office at least a half hour later than usual.
I suspect things were worse for the person who was killed by the train — worse still for that person's family. I wondered if it was drunken stupidity that led the person to the tracks before dawn or the prospect of yet another day of sadness that brought about that fatal decision. I don't know and never will.
On the train, a few people complained about the delay, the crowded conditions that resulted. But not many. Personally, I think folks in New Jersey understand that terrible things could happen to anyone and it's best not to dwell on them. Respect the moment, thank God you and your loved ones are ok, and move on to whatever is next.
Tonight, I'm thinking about that person whose life ended not twenty-four hours ago. I'm hoping the sun shines in blue skies, but I know that if it doesn't I'll be able to get through the day. And I pray that you're all well.

THUMBS UP 1) The competitive nature of it. The fact that you can beat someone by being better with your words. It reminds me of one-on-one basketball. When I used to play basketball as a teenager, against someone who was a similar size to me, it soon became apparent who was better. It wasn't subjective. It was an objective thing. I can beat you because I am better at this. That is part of what I like about rap music. "8 Mile" is a great example of this.
THUMBS DOWN 2) The violence. Is generally a negative, especially the repetitive violence. Sexualised violence is horrible to listen to, but the majority of rap music I listen to doesn't go near that. Only the occasional Eminem track goes in that direction. Sometimes though, the violent lyrics can contribute to the overall feeling of menace, which is actually quite attractive. Music can make you feel emotions. Listening to badass music can make you feel like a badass. Just like listening to JT can make you feel like a futuresexy love machine. Or listening to Nickelback makes you feel dumber. The menacing feeling is pretty cool sometimes. Because, I've got to say, I'm really only menacing to people when I've got a keyboard in front of me and I'm writing a negative story about them.
THUMBS UP 3) The beat. There is a lot of skillful musicianship that goes into rap music, but I don't have to tell you that because you have brains. And no one would dismiss an entire genre of music as useless without recognising the skill that goes into it. Dancing to rap music is a lot easier than dancing to the majority of rock music (especially current rock music, which seems designed to make people move up and down and up and down and that's it). It helps that I love dancing, of course.
THUMBS UP 4) The ability to make a statement. I sometimes feel like rappers are the only ones who aren't afraid to call a spade a spade anymore. It happens less than it used to, but how often to you hear a rock or pop or indie musician make a point about the murder rate in Chicago or the plight of child soldiers in Africa or the hypocrisy of western culture? And if they do make a point like that, how often do they do it without sounding like a massive tool? I love listening to clever, pointed lyrics. Sometimes whimsical just doesn't cut it (hear that, indie bands! Stop with the whimsy!).
THUMBS DOWN 5) The attitude towards women. It's weird. Because rappers clearly love women. But they so often demean them in songs. Perhaps it's because unlike rock stars, rappers actually got women before they were famous? Rockers usually have to wait until they've played a couple of chords at a pub before women find their smelly bums irresistible. Perhaps it's part of the male culture that permeates football clubs, where men who have women throwing themselves at them constantly develop an unhealthy view of the opposite sex. Is it something that rap music suffers with alone? No. Female pop singers do arguably just as much to demean women as rappers do. But it's a part of a culture that is surprising given how many women enjoy rap music.
THUMBS UP 6) The confidence. Pop stars seem so fake and manufactured. Indie musicians lie their asses off about not caring if people like them or not. Rock stars still sing songs about how no one loves them. Rappers say "Hey, I'm young, handsome, talented and rich. Let's party!" There is something appealing about that. It was part of what I liked about Oasis too. Liam and Noel said "We're the biggest band in the world and we're going to party and rock out." If you can't enjoy or use your success, why bother? Confidence is attractive - any dating expert worth their salt will tell you that.
Okay that's a few things. There are more. But that's enough.
Nicki Minaj's album is not quite what I expected. I kinda thought she'd be all "I'm tha bad beeyotch!" and go with the sexualised lyrics that she came out with a year or two ago. Instead, Pink Friday has toned that right down and goes more for the thoughtful and even syrupy songs. It's definitely a good move. I think it might have something to do with the advice Lil Wayne (her boss) gave Drake a while back. Weezy told Drake never to get tattoos, never to get involved with stupid criminal stuff. Because that's what's holding him back from getting a bigger stake in the corporate world. Wayne is covered in tattoos and just spent about a year in jail. Soulja Boy said the same thing in an interview with XXL recently. He looked at what was holding back Lil Wayne, T.I., Gucci Mane and others from continuing their career upwards. It was all legal problems. All three of those rappers released their most popular albums within 18 months of going to prison. It's tough to capitalise on a successful album when you're locked up.
So Nicki Minaj has tried to go mainstream. The beats are quite poppy, with a few recognisable samples and guest spots from Drake, Eminem, Kanye and Will.i.am. They are all fairly poppy and light - except for the Eminem track. Em does NOT HOLD BACK on his verse. And Nicki didn't hold back on hers either, really. Their collaboration, Roman's Revenge, is the only "hood" song on the album.
My favourite song at the moment is Blazin', with Kanye. I love Kanye's verse. It just rolls and flows really well.

So fair play, Nicki. Will be interesting to see if you can turn that talent into a hit single that could break through here in Australia and around the world. I think it's possible.

This album is meant to be listened to as an album, which is rare in these days of iTunes and downloads. This quote: It is so good that I went out and bought Nicki Minaj's album, purely off the strength of her verse on Monster. It is a truly breakout, killer verse.
Fantasy is an idiot-savant smash, an example of a musician overreaching, yet triumphing through dumb bravado and an imagination gloriously unfettered by logic. Kanye actually set out to make the album of the year when nobody listens to albums anymore.

Diana Vickers With Or Without You x factor 2008 live show
diana vickers will be on tonight's x factor 2010 live results show this sunday, so this will make it good, seeing as diana vickers has been one of the most successful past x factor acts, most acts who do not actually win the x factor final seem to disappear, but diana vickers is one of those rare cases of a successful contestant who has not actually won the x factor.
i think it is difficult to call who will be in the bottom 3 on this weeks x factor phone poll results show, the first act with the least votes as like last week is eliminated without even going into the showdown and sing for there survival part of the show.
and so the two acts above that with least votes do the showdown, so does make for quite a tense show when there are 2 acts being voted off instead of just 1 as it has been in the past x factor series.

well it looks like i got my prediction correct on the post i made before the x factor 2010 results show, in this post i made a week before! i predicted nicola festa could be in the bottom 2.
MONDAY, 4 OCTOBER 2010 "if i was to predict possible bottom 2 in next weeks vote i think nicola festa could end up in next weeks bottom 2, but at the moment it is too difficult to tell who will end up where until you see all the acts sing next week."
but i am not doing x factor predictions all the time, even if i do get some right, now and again, but what a good show it was over the weekend, though some acts did fail to really shine on some of the performances overall it was a very good x factor show.
sad to see 2 acts have to leave due to the double elimination thing, this is probably because there are now 16 acts starting the competition instead of the usual 12 acts and so the eliminations have to get rid of more acts quicker to keep the x factor show on schedule.
fyd and katie waissel was the other act who went into the "singing for there survival" part of the show, and this has caused a new x factor controversy again i see in the news.
people thought that katie waissel should of been voted out of the x factor 2010 show and not fyd, at the end of the day though it was down to judges decisions, and the judges chose to vote out fyd, louis walsh did have the option to take it to deadlock, where the act with the fewest votes would of gone, but louis chose to vote out fyd, who where really good singers.
the fun act of the first live show was wagner fiuza carriho and his performance is worth watching, really fun performance from wagner.

x factor 2010 has just started back on tv and this has to be my favourite audition of the new x factor 2010 series by katie waisal, out of all the auditions katie's was the most difficult as she was told to change her song.
so katie waisal changed her song to a queen song, but did not fully remember the lyrics, so then got another chance with another song and managed to just about get the judges favour.
i found this first episode of x factor one of the best opening shows in recent years, was really fun packed with various types of acts, even what could be called a bad act, was in the end bad to be good, and got the judges yes votes as well! more on that other audition tomorrow.

another issue i was just reading about in the news is something about contestants using autotune on there microphones, well through machines the microphones send the sound through, to make the singing of the contestant sound more in tune.
i did not spot this just seen it being talked about on the internet and on twitter, does not bother me really, but a lot of people seem upset with some contestants choosing to use auto-tune on the x factor 2010.
as this auto tune sounds like it is new to this 2010 series of x factor and not previous series of the x factor.
well will have to see how this story develops about the x factor 2010 autotune controversy, but it would not be x factor without some body complaining about the show, i can see why people would be unhappy if technology is being used to make the acts sound better.
all in all though it was still one of the best x factor audition shows i can remember in a long time, x factor auto-tune or no auto-tune, still a great saturday night viewing.
what can you say really though about auto tune, this is technology for you, and with this being such a big tv show they probably do look to use what ever technology they can to get a more polished effect to the overall x factor show.
now when it comes to the x factor 2010 live finals i doubt they would let the finalists use auto-tune though.
So Aussies are "taking over Hollywood" again. While I totally recognise this is part of the Australian "we cannot believe something we made is good unless it is validated in England or the USA" cultural cringe... I still feel it too. I love it when our actors or sportspeople or musicians do well overseas. Geez, even when Savage Garden had a couple of top 10 US hits I was like "nice work, Savage Garden".
All that said, the article makes some interesting points about Australian masculinity.

- An amazing account of a guy who entered rehab for sex addiction. This one is a bit graphic in terms of some of the things he talks about (no pictures, obv). Most pertinent was this quote:

I try not to write too much here about my kids, but lately their music has meandered through my brain a lot. Silly songs, educational songs, songs that should never be played to anyone over the age of three...
But as my girls graduated from the Baby Einstein videos to Sesame Street and Barney, I noticed something shocking: I knew some of these songs! Sure, there were standards like The People in Your Neighborhood and Rubber Ducky. But there was also one about lady bugs that I'd completely forgotten about.
I asked a co-worker what shows she remembered from her childhood. She was born to one of those families that didn't believe in television for many years, so she hadn't seen too much. I've always had a thing for songs and song lyrics. I've entertained/pissed off people by singing the lyrics to a shortlived show from the late '70s called Hello Larry, which starred McLean Stevenson, after he left MASH. Long after I composed songs in my head as I walked to school as a kindergartner, I would find music offered me the first entree to a world of creativity.
It pains me to see the arts decimated in public education. I hate to hear about teachers losing their jobs or ridiculed by people who've never tried to teach that they get paid too much. Teaching children is perhaps the most important job in the world. Those that do it should be continually trained to do it better, and classrooms should be kept at relatively small sizes so that children receive the attention they need and deserve — which means that more teachers are necessary.
I know people will disagree with me. I've heard the arguments. Sometimes, those people make excellent points. But if it weren't for my parents and my teachers, I'd not have been able to succeed in the ways that I have.
