Take me back to Reasonable Doubt... mate!

Nick linked to a photo essay showing the different circles Jay-Z used to create his first album Reasonable Doubt, and his most recent album, The Blueprint III. The thing that really surprised me was that Luke Steele is collaborating on the opening track. Yep, Luke Steele, aka Empire of the Sun aka The Sleepy Jackson, is on the first track of Jay's new album. And I have to think... is this the first time an Australian artist has featured on a major American rap album??? Russell Crowe's movie dialogue has been included on two of Jay's albums, but I can't think of anyone else who has actually sung or rapped on a major album. I could be wrong though.Well, congrats. And I wonder if it was Kanye who got Luke involved, given that Mr West has linked to Empire of the Sun videos a couple of times on his blog.

I finally got Lily Allen's album, It's Not Me, It's You, yesterday. It's good. Really good. She's changed her sound, but for the better and more mature. She's still as lyrically clear as ever. And thematically, well, I found it interesting. She talks a lot about coming home to a man and watching TV and eating takeaway food and just relaxing with each other. Basically, she's talking up domestic bliss (wow, I almost typed Domestic Blitz, that Channel Nine show. Damn their advertising is pervasive!).
And I find that interesting. Pop songs by a young, pretty, successful woman, talking about her dream of domestic bliss with a man????? I think the feminists in the 1970s might have broken down in helpless, frustrated tears (...they wouldn't, obviously, because that would have reinforced negative gender stereotypes).

Anyway, in conclusion: Lily Allen = good. Blueprint 3 = Angus excited.
