Too busy
But here are some links to keep you up to date.
- The classics we secretly hate.
- A breakdown of an incendiary blog post.
- A very depressing article about having a still born child, written by a mother.
- Fleur Audet links to Matt Corby's new song. The video clip is beautifully shot, I don't mind the song. Interesting that he went in that direction following Idol.

Anthony Bourdain on Yo Gabba Gabba
A.) don't have small children.
- or -
B.) don't smoke weed.
Well, Anthony Bourdain - acclaimed author and star of the Travel Channel show "No Reservations" - will be making a guest appearance as Dr. Tony on "Yo Gabba Gabba" on March 10th. Bourdain is also coming to the Weidner Center on June 11th - listen to Rick and Len next week to win tickets. I'm assuming the Weidner show will be more "No Reservations" and very little "Yo Gabba Gabba."
Check out this video of Dr. Tony:

Get your reading on!
- Something completely awesome: An angry rant about how Twilight invented werewolves, and the movie Wolfman was ripping it off.
This movie was a complete waste and I feel that it offends ALL Twilight Fans around the world, that including myself. For one, it was a COMPLETE remakingof the Wolf Pack from the Twilight Saga: New Moon. It gives the werewolves a bad name and makes them look like some deformed mutation of a rabid dog.- Country music in Australia is going through some tough times. So I guess someone will write a song about it.
- The battle to find places for sex offenders to live once they're released from prison. An interesting conundrum. Safe for work, in case you were wondering.
- Boring science story made readable by including a picture of Christina Hendricks in a corset-thingie. Well played, sub-editor... well played. If your work frowns on pictures of voluptuous women in small bits of underwear, best look away.
- One of the weirdest things I've read in a while: groups of strangers in Japan finding each other over the internet and committing group suicide in cars. A really fascinating read. One of the comments made by a guy in Japan really seemed to capture it. He reckons the country lost its ability to produce adults after it lost World War II.
Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. “I don’t see any adults here in Japan,” he says, with a shrug. “The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldn’t have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But that’s what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children.”- A really good article about the attacks on Indians. The writer makes a point that I've been thinking about for a while. What was the cultural background of the attackers? That has not been publicised. What was the socio-economic background of the attackers? What religion did they follow? Were the crimes one of opportunity? All questions that should have been asked at the beginning, and the Indian media missed.
- Shane Crawford picks his AFL ladder. Interesting pick for number one.
And now a couple of political things:
- Peter Costello on Stephen Conroy. While Costello is still a Liberal, he's working for the Government at the moment. And he was always a really, really smart guy. So when he speaks on tax policy, he knows what he's talking about. And it's not clear that Conroy does.
- "True Confessions: My time in the Young Liberals." Sounds like a scary title, and fair enough too. But the final comments were something I have talked about a fair bit:
In hindsight, my time working at the think-tank was quite worthwhile. Apart from allowing me to indulge in the odd healthy, well-rounded meal, it also forced me to confront my own political prejudices.I find that quite an important point. I find so many people I talk to on both sides do not get out of their own little cliques to get an experience about what it's like on the other side. And to be a well-rounded human being, I believe it is essential to do that occasionally.
By being removed from my cosy left-leaning clique I was suddenly without the protection of groupthink and had to justify my beliefs to a group to whom I was speaking a foreign language.
While I highly doubt any of the Young Libs I met will be marching in the next “Free Palestine” rally I like to think we all made an impression on each other. Certainly my opinion on some issues, like internet censorship, has moderated quite substantially.
I found it was actually rather nice to leave the bunker for some fresh air and mingling with the other side.
But please: don’t tell my friends.

Not News.
Unfortunately, far too often the media outlets that are supposed to be providing The News to us, instead spoon feed us "news" that isn't important to the world, country, town, or my life. It's "news" that is too lazy to explain complicated issues. Or worse, don't even cover it because it's too complicated for some lazy reporters to figure out themselves. It's "news" that substitutes ridiculous personal opinions for facts. It's "news" that allows someone without credentials or any fact-based data an equal amount (and often greater amount) of airtime as a respected expert with mountains of well-researched scientific data.
Enough of my rant. Check out this far more amusing look at five things the media loves to pretend are news.

x factor live tour 2010 stacey solomon Who wants to live forever stacey's signature song from the x factor 2009, x factor tour 2010 live on stage
going to compare them all, obviously the versions stacey solomon sang on the x factor tv shows, will come over better then the one of stacey solomon singing on the x factor tour 2010, as the one of stacey solomon singing on the x factor 2010 tour stage has been filmed by somebody using there mobile phone.
but these x factor 2010 tour videos from peoples mobile phones are pretty good, especially the ones where people have got a good position in the audience, some of those are nearly as good as tv cameras.
but that must be how good some of these modern mobile phones are to capture some of the x factor 2010 tour footage so fresh.
"X Factor 2010 Tour - Stacey Solomon - Who wants to live forever - Liverpool Echo Arena"
this next video is one of the original times stacey solomon sang "who wants to live forever" on the x factor 2009 tv show and is probably a bit better then stacey singing this song on the x factor 2010 tour.
"The X Factor 2009 - Stacey Solomon - queen song - who wants to live forever - Live Show 6"
other acts on the x factor 2010 tour are joe mcelderry, olly murs, danyl johnson, jamie archer, lucy jones, lloyd daniels, john and edward aka jedward and stacey solomon.

Chapter 84.7: Olympics Fever
There have been some evenings after I've gotten one of the babies to sleep to find the other one not quite there yet, and I spend another 15-30 minutes trying to get her to sleep too.
And in the background, we've kept the Winter Olympics playing.
I've always enjoyed the winter games. There's something more accessible, more intimate than in the summer games. Indeed, now that there's no baseball in the summer games, I feel even more removed from them. I simply can't relate to men and women who can sprint faster than a stiff breeze. But I've skiied down a hill or two. I've sledded down hills. I've even fallen on my butt while trying to skate. The winter games seem more real to me.
After the tragic death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, I feared that something worse might happen and I thought I might avoid the entire games. But my wife tuned into the opening ceremonies, and we've had them running ever since.
I haven't regretted it. Too soon, the games will be over, and I'll be happy to welcome spring training and baseball. But for now, I am enjoying the games as they offer a small sense of greatness in an otherwise stressful winter.
I'm going for gold for the rest of 2010.
the x factor tour 2010 so far - videos of the x factor 2010 tour perfromances jedward ghostbusters john and edward x factor live 2010
this is also quite a funny video of jedward with there hi jinks.
"x factor tour 2010: JEDWARD - ghostbusters"
this one from the liverpool echo arena is funny as well get to see the other x factor tour acts singing at the start, olly murs, stacey solomon, jamie archer, lucie jones, joe mcelderry, though not sure if it is lucie jones or just stacey solomon on this particular part and also if danyl johnson is in that particular part or not.
"X Factor 2010 Tour - Jedward - Ghostbusters - Liverpool Echo Arena"
wonder if jedward will get a hit with this song in the charts as well as they have done with the old vanilla ice and queen song, jedward featuring vanilla ice under pressure?, though that was probably jedwards best song on the x factor live shows.

The votes are in...
1. Guy Sebastian. Proving to be a commercial success with his latest album, and improving as a singer each year. Is still the go-to man for the Melbourne Christmas Carols (the Carols by which all others are judged). Knocking it out of the box.
2. Jessica Mauboy. ARIA nominations, number one singles, songs with Flo Rida... She's making top level R&B songs from an Australian perspective. Had the highest selling single in Australia last year.
3. Lisa Mitchell. Not the right fit for Idol, but clearly someone with talent. Has been tearing it up on Triple J and at festivals, where she seems to have found her audience.
4. Shannon Noll. Not at his peak anymore, but still a reliable performer for large regional venues. A bit of a tool, by all accounts, though.
5. Ricki-lee Coulter. A personal favourite, she had Idol hosting duties last year. Can belt out a song, and still a better performer than almost all the other contestants on the show.
6. Anthony Callea. Okay, so I may have had a bit of a freakout at the Carols the other year when I saw he was listed (along with his boyfriend Tim Campbell) and I said "How awesome would be it be if they came out and sang 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' together?" AND THEN THEY DID. AND IT WAS AWESOME. Anyway, he's still the biz.
7. Rob 'Millsy' Mills. Doing musical theatre in Melbourne, and that seems about right. I think he's found his level.
8. Paulini Curuenavuli. Doing some solo stuff, had some interesting things to say about domestic violence, no music I've liked to listen to in a while.
9. Dean Geyer. Is he still on Neighbours??? I don't know. I missed most of that Idol season. No longer as famous since he stopped going out with a Veronica (I don't know which one).
10. Damien Leith. He still shares a name with an obscure Tasmanian town (...it's not the town of Damien, if that's what you're thinking), and I still don't listen to his music.
So, yes, no Australian Idol this year. Perhaps no Australian Idol ever. Which would be kind of sad, but then these things do have their useby dates. Whatever the cynics say (and cynics say a shizzload... screw cynics ay?), the Idol phenomenon has seen a sharp increase in the number of Australian music acts selling music in Australia. So yes, they're not INXS or Midnight Oil or a hardworking rock band who never quite made it to the big time. But who cares? Those bands are old and boring and for old people. Who are boring.
Goodbye Australian Idol. I will still follow your children with interest.

Are You Raising a Douchebag? Yes.
It's not your job to be your kid's friend. It's your job to be a parent. Great article from Details magazine here.
You Will Never Pay Off Your Credit Cards
Having real credit card issues? Try getting into a Debt Management Plan (DMP) through organizations like Money Management International. They'll negotiate with credit card companies to get your interest rates down to nothing (or almost nothing), lower your minimum payments, and help you make your payments on time. I've been working with them personally for about 5 years and will have what started out at around $30,000 in credit card debt paid off this summer.
