Artists I'm checking out
Occasionally I make the decision to buy an album by an artist that I've only ever heard about, not actually heard. These are usually people who don't get played on mainstream or alternative radio in Australia (except if they have a crossover single).
Next up
T.I. - I don't know much about him, but I've heard a couple of songs I like. He's got a clear voice, a clever flow and seems intelligent. And I think all his recent legal troubles will help his creativity. His next album, Paper Trail, is his first in recent times where he's going to write his lyrics down. I hope this will result in a better album. Only Jay-Z and Lil Wayne (in my opinion) consistently bring their A-game when thinking on their feet.
Mary J. Blige - This one might seem a bit strange, but stick with me. Mary's been around for years - Puffy launched her! So we are talking old. She's renowned as one of the most honest and soulful voices in America. When she sings, you hear her pain. And not cos her voice is painful. Her collaboration with U2 on a version of One is actually one of my favourite songs. I think she improves on the original. Seriously. And on the dancefloor, Family Affair is fun. But she's known for her ballads - check out No More Drama. A very honest song. Another honest one - Take Me As I Am. Especially towards the end, when she starts powering through it. Anyway, I think I might see what she's got to offer. For all her drug problems, violently abusive relationships and industry dramas, she's come through it strong and it's improved her work.

Lil Wayne - I've got to say I was impressed with Tha Carter III. Wayne brought out his best for his own stuff. Clever song ideas, the excellent word play he's known for, and some great production from the best in the business. I don't know how he's going to follow it up - I hope he continues to be creative and pushes the envelope.
