Today we have: "assonance in rap lyrics"
This is my favourite assonant rap verse - it helps to say it out loud.
Eminem's Lose Yourself
"Make me king, as we move toward a, new world order
A normal life is boring, but superstardom's close to post mortem
It only grows harder, only grows hotter
He blows us all over these hoes is all on him
Coast to coast shows, he's know as the globetrotter
Lonely roads, God only knows
He's grown farther from home, he's no father
He goes home and barely knows his own daughter
But hold your nose cause here goes the cold water
His hoes don't want him no mo, he's cold product
They moved on to the next schmoe who flows
He nose dove and sold nada
So the soap opera is told and unfolds
I suppose it's old partner', but the beat goes on
Da da dum da dum da da"
How good is that?!!??! Freakin' awesome! And, as an interesting aside, there is no swearing in that verse. Actually, Em has quite a few profanity-free verses. But you wouldn't know it from a lot of the media attention he gets. Possibly because some of his other verses are especially violent and profane...
Anyway, assonance is great because it creates a flow. A rolling beat, with a rolling rhyme sound is very infectious. Some of my favourite little bits of songs are assonant. There's something almost child-like about hearing the same sounds sung in a melodic tone. And there's no little skill involved. Writing that verse must have taken a significant amount of time. Eminem is an excellent freestyler, but that verse was definitely thought out and planned. It was one of his biggest hits, the main single from his movie, and an Oscar winning song. That's right, it won an Academy Award for Best Song. And to be honest, it craps all over most other Best Song winners I can think of.
Tomorrow - "centaur teaching a boy"!
