Dexter - a man with serial killer impulses is trained by his foster father to use his natural tendencies for good, rather than evil. So Dexter becomes a vigilante, killing those bad people who have escaped justice, rather than letting his impulses push him towards killing innocents.

So... would other shows in this vein work?

Steve - a kleptomaniac struggles to control his impulses to steal, until he decides to steal from the bad guys! Steve takes anything crooks are about to sell or use, and then turns it into his trusty police buddy Charles "Cranker" O'halloran.

Evan - an incurable pyromaniac, Evan just loves to burn stuff down. But the tragic destruction of an orphanage thanks to one of Evan's fires sets him straight. Now he only uses his pyromaniacy to scare some bad guys... and smoke out justice.

George Johnson - thanks to an upbringing in a hippy cult, George Johnson is used to showing his body. A little too much. After his trial for flashing two old ladies, George Johnson decides to use his trenchcoat and sexy body for good - by giving the bad guys a good look at his private member. When the crooks are about to get the gold, George Johnson gives them a good look at the "family jewels". While they're distracted, George Johnson calls the police... in a flash!

Henson - a convicted pedophile, Henson decides to use his urges for good. He... um... . Henson decides to... he umm... then... went... umm... . Henson decides to take nude photographs of children for art exhibitions? umm... no... . He kidnaps children back from other pedophiles and then returns them to their parents? Really? I don't know. This... this won't work.

Now, I know Bill Henson takes good photos. It's true. But there's some weird stuff going on with him. Like going into a school, looking at kids, imagining what they would look like naked, and asking the principal to okay them for photographing. Or, when he was struggling to find child models for his nude photos, remembering the daughter of some people he had met five years ago, when she was seven, and looking them up and asking if she would pose for him. That's... that's a bit weird. Who remembers kids from five years ago and wants to look at them naked???

Also, Dexter is apparently a great show. Shaun thinks it might be better than the Wire and every other show on television. I... will have to watch it before I say that. But I'm willing to be open-minded. Even though it won't be better than the Wire ;)
