Looking through the books on politics, society and the environment today, I was struck by something (not shoes, thankfully).
When reading a statement or opinion, it is very important to remember who profits from it. Who benefits?
Eg, a social expert writes about social problems, arguing the need for more to be done. And if something is done? Who benefits? Indirectly, society. Directly? Social experts, who get hired as consultants.
Another eg. A climate scientist writes about climate problems, arguing that more research and action is needed. And what happens when Governments decide to act? Who gets grant money and consultancy fees? Well... yes... climate scientists.
What I'm saying is this: rarely does someone argue an opinion that will do themselves out of a job. People are much more likely to argue opinions that will keep them employed. AND... people's opinions change, depending on their job prospects.
I think that point is very important to remember when listening to an argument or opinion. Who benefits? Who profits?
