Something I've been thinking for a while is this: singles are much more important now than albums. Artists can survive on releasing singles alone, in my opinion. And while albums bring in the majority of cash, increasingly they are collections of radio-friendly tracks aimed at getting play.Rihanna is the perfect example.
She's released three albums in three years, sure. But mostly just to back up her impressive output of singles.
So far she's had 12 songs in the US Top 40 since 2005. I can't think of another artist who has had that sort of impact in recent times. Here's some of the songs you might have heard
Pon De Replay
SOS
Unfaithful
We Ride
Break It Off
Umbrella
Shut Up And Drive
Don't Stop The Music
Take A Bow
Disturbia
Rehab
Plus she featured in:
If I Never See Your Face Again (Maroon 5)
Live Your Life ( T.I.)
She may have a history of terrible fashion choices, but she is undeniably popular.
That's a lot of singles. She's got enough for a greatest hits already.
I think this is the trend of the future. The growth of iTunes has shown artists they can put out good songs and people will buy them online.
