My favourite sporting nicknames
Cricket
Steve "Tugga" Waugh - pretty obvious, but fun.
Allan "Captain Grumpy" Border - another obvious one, but only because he was a grumpy bastard.
Mark "Afghanistan" Waugh - so-called in the late 80s because while his brother Steve was playing for Australia, Mark was the "forgotten Waugh" aka "Afghanistan". Not so applicable now because we're fighting in Afghanistan (again).
Harbhajan "The Turbanator" Singh - he's a Sikh, he's a spin bowler with a massive mouth, he takes wickets and he wears a turban. A good one.
Mfuneko "Chewey" Ngam - say his nickname and last name as one word...
VVS "Very Very Special" Laxman - he picked this up because his real first three names are Vangipurappu Venkata Sai. Yeah. Also cos he came out of nowhere to smash a double hundred against Australia and save the series in 2001.
Football
Gary "God" Ablett - Geelong fans were really into the whole saviour thing.
Barry "Big Bad Bustling" Hall - his nickname his usually used before his name, as a sort of prefix. And if you've even seen him, you know why. He is one of Australia's best heavyweight boxers, and he doesn't even compete in the sport.
Gary "Son of God" Ablett jr - and they still are, with young Gary actually winning a premiership too.
Basketball
Charles "The Round Mound of Rebound" Barkley - he was 6'6" but he played like he was 6'10". Another one with a massive mouth on him.
Kenny "Sky" Walker - he could fly with the best of them, so yes, Kenny Sky Walker had an awesome nickname.
Karl "The Mailman" Malone - Why, you ask? Why "The Mailman"? Cos he always delivers. Boom, yes. A bit cheesy. But.
Jason Kidd - was known as "Ason Kidd" early in his career cos he had no "J" (jump shot). Cold, but accurate.
Darrel "Dr Dunkenstein" Griffiths - heh heh heh this one is awesome.
Soccer
David "Goldenballs" Beckham - so applicable on so many levels. His passes, or balls, are legendary for their accuracy and perfection, ie golden balls. Also, everything he touches turns to gold. And he's freakin' rich. Goldenballs.
Stuart "Psycho" Pearce - because when he went onto the pitch he was a crazy as they came.
Anyone got any others they like?
