What makes a good blog? Mike has written about this in the past.
Personally, I look for a few things in a blog:
- Clever subject choices. Usually things no one else has written about, or a new take on something. Pryderi does this well.
- Regular updates. It's very disappointing to find a good blog with fun articles only to find they hardly ever come up with anything new.
- Good-sized entries. By that I mean that they're not too long. Dot points are useful too.
- Cool pictures. Or at least pretty pictures. Or pretty people. Like this oneOr this one(Can you believe Donald Trump's daughter turned out to be ridiculously gorgeous? Well played, Trumpster! And David Beckham, well, he's everything to everyone. Blond, dark, clean-shaven, bristled, muscular, thin, brooding, smiling, stylish, sporty... yes, he is a bit of a dude.)
- A clear viewpoint. You know what you're going to get at the DailyKos or Digg, just like you know what to expect with Tim Blair. If I'm looking for left or right-wing reaction on some news, I know where to go.
- Up-to-date news. The best news blogs are the ones who stay on top of what's happening and can provide and context and reaction quickly after the event. It's not always accurate, but it's nice to know how to put it in perspective.
If you're thinking of starting a blog, I would say "blog what you know", but that isn't necessarily the best option. If I were to blog about what I know? It would be all Premier League soccer, NTFL football, Star Wars, how to handle girls' emotions, popular rap music, terrible 90s pop, long swathes of Christian doctrine, producing a newspaper, the Tasmanian political scene, awesome tv shows, terrible tv shows, playing sport (well), and finding stuff on the internet.
Actually, that list looks kinda awesome...
