Any way the wind blows...

I am so out of touch with the voters in the Hottest 100 of all time. The Top 10 holds almost no relevance to me.

Here's the 10
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana
2. Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine
3. Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley
4. Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division
5. Paranoid Android by Radiohead
6. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
7. Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley
8. Under The Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers
9. Everlong by Foo Fighters
10. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

Only Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody would have made my top 10. I had never heard three of the tracks before today, while Paranoid Android is just kinda boring, except for the occasional bassline.

At the party at Shaun's, the room went off when Bohemian Rhapsody played. And people moshed at Killing In The Name. There was only one hip-hop track - the Hilltop Hoods' 'Nosebleed Section'. I like the song. I think it's a reflection of hip-hop's lack of a breakthrough into the collective consciousness in Australia.

People picked their songs based on personal memories. We haven't had many rap tracks break through here. Hip-hop tracks can be number one here in Australia, but they haven't found places in people's hearts. I personally thought Eminem's 'Stan' might have snuck in ahead of 'Dammit', 'Skinny Love' or 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)'. Catchy songs, sure. But not better than Stan. (Or Kanye's Jesus Walks, for that matter).

My top 10, had I voted, would have been:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
2. Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
3. Billie Jean (Michael Jackson)
4. Day In The Life (The Beatles)
5. With Or Without You (U2)
6. Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley)
7. The Boxer (Simon and Garfunkel)
8. Jesus Walks (Kanye West)
9. Stan (Eminem)
10. Livin' On A Prayer (Bon Jovi)

Oh yes, that's right. Bon Jovi. Show me a better pop song, and I will show you a song that doesn't exist.
