Following on from the Daggy post, I've been thinking about songs that have not only stood the test of time, but are classic examples of a song that captures a mood, or a moment, or the energy around an artist at that time.
I thinking those songs that when you hear them, you can feel the energy in them, hear an artist at their absolute creative peak, making the most cuttingly-powerful music they can.
Examples (in my mind) include:
- Billie-Jean by Michael Jackson. A fantastic piece of music, with an edge.
- Stan by Eminem. You can feel the mood so strongly in this song.
- Jesus Walks by Kanye. This song is just a guy rapping what's in his heart, over a chilling beat.
- Crazy in Love by Beyonce. The horns, the drums, B's soaring vocals...
- Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2. Those drums cannot be stopped.
- Superstition by Stevie Wonder.
- Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees.
- Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand
- Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.
These are songs that I think have energy, power, and capture a mood. What do you think? Anyone got any others?
