Welcome Milwaukee Brewers 2009
Thank God spring is almost here. This snow makes me cry. I know it's getting close though because Milwaukee Brewers tickets went on sale yesterday and of course I am one of those people who are at their computer right when they go on sale. I had to wait....and wait....and wait....I was put into a virtual waiting room for 1 hour and 45 minutes. It sucked, but I got the tickets we wanted. The big draw for me are the bobble head games, I have a whole ton of them at home and I need to keep adding to the collection. I already smell the grills gettin fired up!.....Oh and this guy made a cool Miller Park out of legos, but he has to have no life. Enjoy!
Chapter 82.6: Rocky Mountains Crash to Earth
I don't have personal stories to share about what that paper meant to me, but I'm sure they exist, and I'd be happy to have people share them here in comments.
Journalism remains popular with college students. I see news of new fellowships and grants for journalists all the time, and I hear from college students that they want to get into journalism. So I know the interest is out there. What isn't out there right now is a viable business model that would allow many of the old papers to continue to exist. The old model isn't working anymore.
Papers have gone online, and that's good. I suspect many of them eventually will only exist online. And that isn't as good, because not everyone has access to the Internet. That's a discussion for another time.
If nothing else, I'll reflect on the death of a grand old paper, what it means for the hundreds of people who worked there and their families, and look forward to the future of journalism, because people remain unchanged in their desire to have access to objectively presented information.

Tomorrow I will be on a beach... Tomorrow I will be on a beach... Tomorrow I will be on a beach
Having a rough time this week getting through everything that needs to be done before leaving for the WAPL International Incident. It's not just getting packed and prepping all of the station stuff for the broadcast, but it's putting together all the stuff that needs to run back home while I'm gone, and having everything done that's kicking off the week we get back. Plus, getting bills paid, running to the bank, making sure camera batteries are charged, memory cards are empty, iPod is properly stocked and charged, headphones are packed, DVR is set to record the proper programs while we're gone (and that there's enough memory to make sure everything gets recorded), returning phone calls, changing my outgoing voice mail at work, confirming prizes for WAPL's big spring promotion, yada yada yada...
It's enough to make someone need a vacation.

The Future of Late Night. The future Conan? That's right TV's Andy Richter... all the way to the year 2000.
I've been following the NBC late night TV shifts with some curiosity. Leno's leaving The Tonight Show, Conan's taking over the Tonight Show, and Jimmy Fallon is taking over Late Night.
Leno's final The Tonight Show is on May 29th - not soon enough for me - after which he'll be moving to a 9pm prime time slot so NBC doesn't have to come up with any original programming anymore.
Frankly I saw this as the network spitting in the eye of O'Brien. "Hey, we're giving you the Tonight Show when Leno retires." And then in a Favre-like dick move... "Whoops, Leno's not exactly retiring - so we're still going to have him on before you every night... just earlier."
As for Fallon, he's a funny and creative guy. I liked a good portion of what he used to do on SNL. I'm just hoping that he's matured enough that he'll be able to go five minutes without losing it and laughing at his own jokes. We'll find out next week when he takes over Late Night.
As for Conan, I'm really looking forward to his new time slot when he starts up June 1, much in the way I was thrilled to see Letterman move up over a decade ago. And today I saw even better news: Andy Richter will be joining Conan as announcer for the show, much in the way he used to work on Conan's Late Night and probably a little of the Ed McMahon vibe from Carson's Tonight Show. Richter is hilarious and will definitely add to the show - I'm hoping they bring back the old staring contests.
For the last few years, I've had a solid late night schedule: Daily Show at 10. Colbert at 10:30 while flipping over to Letterman. Then Craig Ferguson's monologue, followed by the rest of Conan O'Brien. Now this will make it tougher for me to decide what to watch at 10:30... I still love Dave... but Conan with Andy is a powerful duo. And will Fallon have the chops to pull me away from Ferguson's brilliantly stream-of-consciousness monologues?
I'll definitely be staying up to find out.

Shannon from Home and Away and that girl from Scary Movie
I just saw the (pretty terrible) House Bunny, and while it was definitely bad, Anna Faris was likeable. In fact she was pretty dang funny. She's definitely got some comedic talent (delivering lines like "You want to bring out your eyes. Your eyes are the nipples of the face" with a straight face would take some effort).
And Isla Fisher, who was pretty classic in Wedding Crashers, definitely can pull off funny. She is talented, pretty, and likeable.
So I reckon some Hollywood casting genius should search around for a script that pairs these two together. Some sort of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, or perhaps something just a tad better than that, and get them onscreen. Because I think they'd make a great movie together. Just saying.

The Book Shepherd
Anyway, I've read some of the books all good, Western, university-educated people should have:
The Bible
The Koran (well, a good part of it)
The Communist Manifesto (bloody hard to get through it was too)
The Prince (The language was tough, but the ideas were bang on the money)
The Road to Serfdom (another hard one, but an incredibly prescient piece of work)
And I've read some important novels too:
The Godfather
The Lord of the Rings (and The Silmarillion, which captured my imagination as a teenager)
1984
Animal Farm
I've had a good crack at a bunch of Shakespeare:
King Lear
Macbeth
The Merchant of Venice
(and others, I can't remember which)
I've also done my fair share of trawling through the classics:
The Odyssey
The Iliad
The Aeneid
Histories (and what a crock of shizz it was too! Freaking Herodotus)
Symposium
But I haven't done a lot of reading recently, well, nothing of any great quality.
Here are the books I want to read - basically the author's best stuff. I figure why bother with something he or she wrote that isn't quite as good:
Slaughterhouse-Five
Brave New World
Love in the Time of Cholera
Lolita
Paradise Lost
Heart of Darkness
I think I've had a pretty good education, but I also know there is a lot more out there. And I want to better understand the themes and ideals that our society is built on. We don't tend to see big allegorical novels as much anymore... well, not successful ones at least. Movies tend to do it a bit more, with The Dark Knight (aka "the George Bush apologist film", as Dr Harry calls it), a prime example.
Anyway, I was inspired by two things: this article about England's poet laureate, who said teaching major works of English literature was becoming more difficult because students lack enough knowledge of the Bible or classical mythology to appreciate them.
And In Cold Blood was cheap and I needed something to read on the plane :)
Anyway, suggestions? What else should I read?
Link me up, before you go-go
First of all, could Nazi genetic experiments be behind the reason that 38 pairs of twins were born in a small Brazilian village made up of just 80 families (of German descent)?
Five clips from Late Night With Conan O'Brien, who is moving on to host the Tonight show.
A great story about Jason Bateman, star of Arrested Development, Hancock and Teen Wolf Too.
And a woman tells of her desire to have a Halo-themed wedding. "I wanted to have my cake and eat it too: a classy wedding that represented us as gamers while celebrating what brought us together. I know, I know… what about Master Chief performing the ceremony? I realize that wasn’t very subtle, but he actually came into the picture much later. Either way, I think my family would have had a much more violent reaction to me not wearing a wedding dress than Master Chief marrying us"
Enjoy!
I'll miss you!!!!.......until June

Congratulations to one of our favourite little celebrity princesses - Matilda Rose Ledger - on the Academy Award win to her late father, Heath Ledger
We are delighted for one of our favourite celebrity princesses - Matilda Rose Ledger - who will receive her father's award on her 18th birthday, held in trust for her by her mother, actress Michelle Williams
Heath's parents and sister made a heartfelt acceptance speech on his behalf and we are sure that Heath is looking down on his loved ones with pride
As a mother, it is heart breaking to think that little girl will grow up without her father, especially one that had so much of life left to experience, but having said that, Matilda always appears to be a happy little girl and we will continue to follow her life and baby style as she grows into a beautiful young woman

Basically, I'm used to lyrics having meaning; having something to say. Good rappers tell stories, make points, make jokes, inform the listener.
Take this verse from Lupe Fiasco's 'Little Weapon':
I killed another man today,If you didn't pick it up, it's a song about child soldiers. He follows it up with this:
Shot him in his back as he ran away,
Then I blew up his hut with a hand grenade,
Cut his wife's throat as she put her hands to pray,
Just five more dawgs then we can get a soccer ball,
That's what my commander say,
How Old?
Well I'm like ten, eleven, been fighting since I was like six or seven,
Now I don't know much about where I'm from but I know I strike fear everywhere I come,
Government want me dead so I wear my gun, I really want the rocket launcher but I'm still too young,
This candy give me courage not to fear no one,
To fear no pain, and hear no tongue,
So I hear no screams and I shed no tear,
If I'm in your dreams then your end is near.
Yeah
Cute Smileless, Heartless, violentSure, a lot of rappers have nothing to say. Or what they do say is crap. But if you mainly listen to good rap or hip-hop, you'll get used to hearing interesting things - things that make you think.
Childhood destroyed, devoid of all childish ways,
Can't write their own names or read the words on their own graves
Think you gangster, popped a few rounds,
These kids will come through and murder a whole town,
Then sit back and smoke and watch it burn down,
The grave gets deeper the further we go down
Rarely can I actually say that about regular pop music (which I love - don't get me wrong!).
Take this catchy song from my iPod:
I won't tell you that I love youIt's just one out-of-context example from the charts at the moment (and the current no. 1 song is a rap song about how a girl in a strip club is making Flo Rida's head spin 'Right Round'... great song btw!), but you might see what I'm getting at.
Kiss or hug you
Cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin
I'm not lying I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunning
Just like a chick in the casino
Take your bank before I pay you out
I promise this, promise this
Check this hand cause I'm marvelous
Can't read my,
Can't read my
No he can't read my poker face
(She's got to love nobody)
Of course, there are examples of good musicians who actually say something with their songs. But I tend to find that they have to be exceptional musicians to pull it off. Otherwise they sound like whiny protesting tools.
Rappers who can have something to say on occasion:
Lupe Fiasco
T.I.
Kanye West
Jay-Z
Lil Wayne
Any number of old school rappers
Any number of underground rappers
Eminem
Common
Some members of Wu-Tang
