Theme :: Collapse of the Metrodome roof in Minneapolis.   The Vikings-Giants game was postponed until tonight, and will be played in Detroit because of the damage in Minnesota.

If you haven't seen the footage of the roof as it collapsed, it's way more exciting than anything the Vikings have done this season.

Since I don't have time to blog this week (I'm going on a little trip), I'll just throw slap video on your screen. It's an Icelandic football (soccer) team doing goal-dances. I don't like to watch sports, but this had me laughing.

Here's also Krummavisur, very old Icelandic folk song sung in a very cool way by a German band called In Extermo. The singer sings in Icelandic, with a heavy German accent, but kudos for doing it anyway.

Aaaand...here's the original music, if interested. Hearing it always reminds me of vikings.

Prince + VIkings = WTF?

OK, so I've always known that musical god Prince is from Minneapolis.  It's even an old Chris Rock joke that the only two black people in Minnesota are Prince and Kirby Puckett.

But apparently now the Purple One is a fan of the Purple and Gold.  And as much as we all hate the Vikings, when I heard that Prince - F**KING PRINCE! - the guy who wrote "Let's Go Crazy," "Purple Rain," "Gett Off," and "Pussy Control" had written a song for the Vikes... I thought, "Holy crap.  Prince is awesome.  This song is going to be awesome.  Even if it is about the stupid damn Vikings.  Oh no, what if this song is so good it makes me like the Vikings?"

No worries.

It seems that the Viking Vortex of Suck is doing its damage this year.  First they get Brett Favre.  Then they walk all over the rest of the NFC North (your Packers and my Bears).  And now this...

Wow. The Vikings have actually made Prince suck. I hate the Vikings even more now. And I pray that they lose to the Saints this weekend, so we never have to hear that piece of crap song again.

Packers Fans... WTF?

Ok. Seriously. I know you love the Packers. And I know you're upset because...

A) Brett Favre is playing for the Vikings now.
B) Brett Favre and his Vikings kicked the crap out of the Packers last week.
C) Aaron Rodgers is getting sacked more often than he's completing passes.
D) You're probably going to finish third in the division behind the Bears and Vikings.

But you really need to CALM THE F*#K DOWN! It's just football. It's a game. You're going to have good seasons... and bad seasons... and a lot of mediocre seasons in between. There's no reason to STAB A VIKINGS FAN over it. No matter how much Vikings fans piss us all off sometimes.

Remember... You had plenty of bad seasons even when Favre was still playing for the Pack. And there was a LONG stretch in the 80's when the Packers plain out sucked. You'll get through it. Things will get better. At least you're not a Lions fan.

There's no reason to be a drunken idiot and stab someone. Let us Bears fans be the dicks of the NFC North. We've had plenty of practice, and usually no one gets stabbed over it.

Chapter 73.1: Passing of a Forgotten Sports Legend

I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about baseball and its history, and even I had forgotten about Bob Howsam. [Billy Beane beware; this may be what happens to you 40-50 years from now.]

So when I saw Howsam's obituary the other day, I felt embarassed for demonstrating yet again how quickly people forget. It's easy to point to Howsam's successes building the Cincinnati Reds clubs of the 1970s -- the Big Red Machine.

He was the general manager who hired Sparky Anderson -- a basically unknown former entity in 1970 -- to manage the team. Even Anderson, who went on to become a Hall of Fame manager of World Series champions in both the National (Reds) and American (Tigers) leagues -- was surprised at being named manager. Together, Anderson and Howsam put together a team that was the best NL team of 1970s, and after the A's, the second best team of that decade.

Howsam also helped create the Denver Broncos in the old American Football League. That was before my time, but apparently they were known for having really ugly socks. Of course, they became known for much more than that. While Howsam was running the Big Red Machine, the Orange Crush Defense and quarterback Craig Morton were getting beaten in the Super Bowl by the Dallas Cowboys. Later, the Broncos became John Elway's team and won two championships after several disappointments. I don't know how much -- if at all -- Howsam's legacy fit into those achievements, but his is a name that should not have been forgotten.

Chapter 72.6: Giants!!!

They did it!

The Giants have won the Super Bowl, defeating the heavily favored New England Patriots. This truly was one of the most exhilerating sports experiences of my life. Not quite as thrilling as Game 6 of the 1986 World Series or as satisfying as the Mets victory in that same series.

This game was even more thrilling than the Giants last Super Bowl victory, over the Buffalo Bills, because that was largely due to Scott Norwood's failure to make a field goal.

Eli to Tyree! Eli to Plaxico. Fantastic memories that every Giants fan will cherish for generations.

Chapter 70.1: Turkey Time!

Ah, Thanksgiving! One of those uniquely American holidays that we should all be thankful for. Not only does it allow most of us to enjoy a four-day weekend, it also focuses on two of my favorite things: family and food. (I'd add football too, because it sounds good with the other "f" sounds, but I'm really a baseball guy.)

This year, my wife and I have gotten a break. For the first time in a few years, we've not volunteered to host Thanksgiving. I'm really glad, too, because work for me was very busy, and with the new kitten, Oreo, we've had a lot more tasks taking up our time than usual.

But enough about me. It's time for us all to go over the river and through the woods to the in-laws' house. Watch some football, drink some beer, eat lots of food, and laugh into the night. Have a happy Thanksgiving, everyone! And if you're waking up early to partake in the various Black Friday sales, drive carefully. There are other nutjobs on the road too. Man, what's the deal with all the 4 a.m. store openings this year? That's a different topic...

Chapter 51.4: The Bird

Another turkey come and gone. It was a pleasant day, despite the weather. No turkey bowl, but lots of turkey and several bowls. Now people are leaving. And the holiday season has officially begun. Safe home.

Chapter 51: Turkey Week

The Christmas commercials have begun, the temperature's been in the 60s recently, and the house is undergoing its annual makeover. That's right, it's Thanksgiving time again!

This year isn't any more special than previous years, but it'll be crowded. And not everyone will be in our tiny home in our tiny town. But the basement's ready for bumper pool and beer. If the weather holds up, we'll have a Turkey Bowl ("sponsored" by Bass Ale). And we've eaten enough food from Shop-Rite to qualify for the free frozen turkey.

I'm sure it'll all work out fine, but I'm almost looking forward to getting back to work in a week.
