CARNIVAL OF BINCHE!!!!

The Carnival of Binche is an event that takes place each year in the Belgian town of Binche, during the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday.  The carnival is best known of all the others that take place in Belgium,  at the same time and has been proclaimed as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.  Its history dates back to approximately the 14th century.

Events related to the carnival begin up to 7 weeks prior to the primary celebrations.  Street performances and public displays traditionally occur on the Sundays approaching Ash Wednesday, consisting of prescribed musical acts, dancing  and marching.  Large numbers of Binche's inhabitants spend the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday in costume.

The centerpiece of the carnival,  are clown like performers,  known as Gilles.  Appearing, for the most part, on  "Shrove" Tuesday, the Giles are characterised by their vibrant dress, wax masks and wooden footwear.  They number up to 1,000 at any given time, ranging in age from 3 to 60 years old, and are customarily male.  The honor of being a Gille at the carnival is something that is aspired to by local men.  From dawn on the morning of the carnival's final day, Gilles appear in the center of Binche, to dance to the sound of drums and ward off evils spirits by slapping sticks together.  Later, during the day, they don large hats adorned with Ostrich plums, which can cost upward of $300 dollars to rent, and march through town carrying baskets of oranges.  These oranges are thrown to, and sometimes at, members of the crowd that gather to view the procession.  The vigor and longevity of the orange throwing event has in the past, caused damage to property...some residents choose to seal windows to prevent this.

On Shrove Tuesday townspeople don their fancy costumes that were imagined and made months before and created by each participant.  In the morning at approximately 8 a.m. the drums go from  house to house to gather up the participants.  At about 10 a.m., the small groups collected by the drums meet in the heart of Binche.  It is the moment the townspeople prefer, when they discover the marvelous, original costumes.  At about 3:30 p.m., people gather at the station area.  The societies go back to the center of Binche, dancing to the music of the drums and the brass bands, forming a living multicolored ribbon.

On Shrove Monday, the feast is a  traditional,  more private gathering of locals.  To the tune of the viols and the hurdy-gurdies, they all go from pub to pub, and from pub to friends and neighbors houses, as they get ready to invite the voil, who are dancing in the streets.
At about 3 p.m. the children gather, just like the adults had done the day before.  The younger ones dance to the music of the drums and brass bands.  They then convene in the Town Square, they all dance to the "rondeau de l'amite."  Then after hours of dancing and singing until about 8 p.m., they leave to enjoy fireworks at the stationing area.

5 Things you won't find in Denmark

There are somethings I can't help but notice that are missing from life here....

  • Chocolate Chips
Those delicous melty morsels that every mother throws into thier kids' favorite cookie.  Alas, you won't find it here. There's plenty of marzipan though.

  • Gas-Guzzlers
The streets here are filled with bikes and pedestrians, and public transport is efficient and readily-available.
And if you do have a car, you're more likely to buzz around in a little pop can rather than fork out the money for something bigger [what some Americans might refer to as a "real car"].  But when cars cost about twice as much, and gas is the price of gold that bicycle starts looking really sexy.

  • Ziplock Bags
This one just breaks my heart. I'm a bit of a kitchen efficiency effianato, and living without ziplocks in the kitchen is a bit like asking me to play the guitar without the use of my thumbs.

    "Let's go to the 'Bucks!"
  • Starbucks.
It's true... I live without Starbucks. I've seen one in the airport, but that's about 3 hours away from where I live. Gasp!  Actually I'm not much of a fan usually, but when you're aching for something familiar, the evils of corporate America is a lot less important than my hazelnut cappicino and old friends!

  • Refried Beans.
Ay chiwawa! Yes, I have finally found pinto beans here and have mastered a home-made version, but you can forget about buying them anywhere.  And forget about finding a Taco Time, Muchas Gracias or any Mexican restaurants for that matter.  Danes are putting away a lot more roasted potatoes, pickled fish and remoulade than anything from south of the border (and so am I!).

Avant-Garde 83rd annual Academy Awards

James Franco, in Gucci, with Anne Hathaway, in Givenchy Haute Couture.

Isn't she adorable? Just look at the glow!!! Pregnancy looks so cute on Natalie Portman, even though she doesn't look pregnand here. She is wearing Rodarte gown, with Tiffany & Co. jewels and Jimmy Choo shoes.

Dear Jenny Lawrence, next time you should wear something more glamorous! Jennifer wears Calvin Klein red dress, with Chopard jewels and a Judith Leiber clutch.

Oh Cinderella!!! Hailee Steinfeld, in Marchesa, with Salvatore Ferragamo shoes and clutch. So adorable.

Mila Kunis, in Elie Saab Couture, with Neil Lane jewels. I don't know, but somehow this dress looks like lingerie? Altough, this gown suited her perfectly.

Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott, with Cartier jewels. Everything suited well on her, especially the Emerald Cartier jewels combined with amazing dress, looks wonderful on her!

Mandy Moore, in Monique Lhuillier, with Harry Winston jewels. Same goes for Mandy too, she has to choose another color of the dress next time, this nude color makes her look like white cheese. But Monique Lhuillier is always a perfect choice for the red carpet.

Anne Hathaway, in vintage Valentino Haute Couture, with Tiffany & Co. jewels, and Valentino Garavani. Anne looked gorgeous in red - she changed into 4 different gowns and a Lanvin suit.

I don't know the Sunrise Ruffalo's dress from which designer is, but this dress fits her very well.

The super thin Jennifer Hudson, in Atelier Versace, with Neil Lane jewels. If someone starts complaining that he/she can't lose weight, must see Jennifer as a perfect example, she lost 30 pounds!!! Jennifer looks beautiful on her new shape and orange dress, except the décolleté!

Cate Blanchett was always my favorite and she knows exactly what to wear for the Red-Carpet. This time she wears Givenchy Haute Couture, with Van Cleef & Arpels jewels. Splendid, I just love love love it!

Michelle Williams, in Chanel Haute Couture, with Harry Winston jewels. Next time she has to choose another color for her dress, this nude dress makes her look even more pale.

Jeremy Renner, in Yves Saint Laurent, and Scarlett Johansson, in Dolce & Gabbana.

Can you believe she gave birth to TWINS just a few months ago?
As usually, very elegant Celine Dion, in Armani Privé, with Bulgari jewels.

Halle Berry, in Marchesa, with Neil Lane jewels.
Something is happening to Halle! As we saw her on Golden Globes last time, she was wearing a totally not elegant dress, for the Academy Awards Halle shows us a nude swan look-a-like.

Does Martthew McConaughey know that his wife Camila Alves is one of the most attractive woman/mother on Earth! Camila in Kaufman Franco, with Matthew McConaughey, in Dolce & Gabbana. Most beautiful couple and a perfect match.

Holy Mother of God, few months ago Penélope Cruz gave birth and looks baginn' hot in L'Wren Scott together with her best accessorie Javier Bardem, in Gucci.

C'monn Sharon keep smiling, you look great!!! Sharon Stone, in Dior.

I love her! Hilary Swank, in Gucci Premiere, with Anna Hu jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch. No matter what she wears, looks good on her. She has the perfect body!

Red looks great on Sandra, good choice! Sandra Bullock, in Vera Wang.

Always fashion-forward Gwyneth Paltrow, in Calvin Klein Collection, with Louis Vuitton jewels.
