The Top 5 Video Game Costumes

Video games have become an intrinsic part of popular culture, but no matter how many hours you give to the console you are bound by the limitations of virtual fantasy. You will never spin like Sonic or stomp on the heads of koopa troopas like Mario. However, there is no need to give up hope on the fantasy - people all over the world get one step closer to the perfect video gaming experience by becoming thier favourite video game hero or heroine. Embrace the fantasy of the virtual world with our list of the top 5 video game costumes.

5. Halo

Like the majority of the characters that feature in this list the Halo game series was used as a launch title for its gaming system. Back in 2001 when Microsoft decided the gaming industry had become too big to ignore Halo: Combat Evolved, was one of the original games for the X-box. The game has sold over 5 million copies worldwide making the Master Chief one of the world’s most popular video game characters. Ever wished you could take John-117 to the next level? Travel at light speed and fight the flood ? You can’t, but with this costume you are going to at least look good trying.

4. Street Fighter

To this day even in the original and basic 2D format that it had during its conception in 1987 Street Fighter would still be one of the worlds most popular fighting games. Capcoms creation is a veritable feast of fighting fun. Impersonating these characters can lead to broken bones and hurt egos but whether you want to be Ryu, Chung Li, or Ken now you can. Can I hear a chorus of “Hadouken’s”?

3. Sonic the Hedgehog

He is Sega’s marquee character and his original conception in 1991 was their aim to create a character that could rival Nintendo’s Mario. It worked, as the Sonic video game game series has sold over 50 million copies to date. In October of last year Sonic the Hedgehog was voted the most popular video game character of all time in a poll by MSN. The common myths of Sonic’s heritage are that his character is based on Bill Clinton and the influence for his red boots are a mixture of Santa and the Michael Jackson video Bad. Sonic makes it to #3 on our list but on any given day he could take that #1 spot.

2. Lara Croft

The idea hardly seems revolutionary – use the amazing developments in graphics to create the perfect woman. It’s pretty obvious that this video game character is the one that most men would like to bring to life and most women would like to be. Since 1996 Lara Croft has graced our computer screens and our dreams. She has moved from screen to novels and comics all the way back to the big screen in a film starring Angelina Jolie. In 2008 Lara Croft was voted the 3rd most iconic video game character of all time by MSN, on our of most popular video game inspired costumes list she takes the #2 spot, but for most males a Lara Croft costume is impossible to beat.

1. Super Mario

When you think video games, you think Mario, it’s as simple as that and the reason for this is all down to his longevity. The Italian plumber has been on the scene since 1981 when he was known as “jumpman”. Since that time he has gone onto become a global icon, who has stared in comics, movies and of course numerous adaptations of his famous first video game. He is synonymous with Nintendo and more than that with video gamming and this is the reason that he has that coveted #1 spot. As the man himself would say "Thatsss Arrrriiiggggttt".
