Halloween, Costume & Party Show Wrap Up

I've just returned from the 23rd International Halloween, Costume and Party Show which took place in Rosemont, IL this past week. This is one of the largest annual shows that we attend every year to see what all of the manufacturers' costume lines for this year. So, it is our job to try and figure out now what will be popular for Halloween 2007. It's a tough job indeed! We look into the crystal ball, make and wish and throw the dice! Well, I can't say its that much of a crap shoot, since we have been doing this for quite a while now. I grew up in this business and my dad has been attending this Halloween Show since before it was a Halloween Show! It started out as a party and gift show with a few Halloween costume vendors and has grown and grown.

So, how do we decide now what costumes will be popular for Halloween? Well, movies and TV shows have a big influence in the popularity of Halloween costumes. If the manufacturers can get a license and make a good looking costume for a popular movie character, that is almost always a sure costume bet. This Halloween, you can expect to see lots of Spidermen running around, trying to catch some Halloween candy in their web. Other popular costumes will be characters from Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek, Harry Potter and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to name a few. Every year there are some new design twists on classic costume ideas that bring about updated witches, fairies and pirates with updated fashion looks. And then there are the sexy costumes. Sexy has taken over the costume industry in a big way. If you haven't noticed this over the past few Halloweens, you need to come out of your cave! Just about every costume manufacturer has a line of sexy costumes, so there are so many for us to choose from and wade through. Each company is trying to outdo the other; some have new designs and new ideas and some just keep removing fabric to make the costumes skimpier and skimpier. Soon they might just be left with a leaf, a string, and two sequins!

So, there is my update about this Halloween Show. I will ad some pics I took at the show as soon as i get them loaded on my computer here. In the mean time, let me know what costumes you all would like to see this Halloween. Our buying season ends in March, so I need to know soon!

Chapter 57.1: Making Assumptions

The story is all over the place: ossuaries found nearly a quarter-century ago contained the bones of Jesus of Nazareth, his wife Mary Magdalene, and a son, Judah. The assertion is obviously offensive to Christians, who believe that Jesus not only resurrected from his death on the cross but was bodily assumed into heaven. In other words -- no bones. The other question about whether he was married is also a point of contention, but in my mind is not as significant a matter of faith as whether or not he assumed into heaven.

I'll have to brush up on my Revelations and probably Acts and other books of the New Testament, but the debate makes me curious whether these are the types of things that are predicted to occur before the second coming. Are Christians going to be stuck doubting their faith and only those who are deemed true believers judged worthy of the Kingdom of God? I don't remember the biblical descriptions with certitude. But I will say this: only people who have no concept of probability will believe unequivocally that this is THE Jesus and Mary. This is an argument for people who demand proof but can't be assured of recognizing it when they see it.

Another point I've not seen argued in this situation is the significance of Mary Magdalene's bones being in the Palestine region. Baigent and Lincoln, the guys who took the Holy Blood, Holy Grail argument to the public in the '80s and whose ideas were part of the genesis for Dan Brown's DaVinci Code, claim that their research points to Mary fleeing Palestine and coming to the shores of what is now southern France with her daughter, who passes on the bloodline. So if Mary Magdalene escaped to France, who's this woman that was in the ossuary?

I may fashion myself an intelligent man, but I'll admit that I take my religious belief as a matter of faith. I'll accept some things that might not make sense scientifically. Do I suspect that Mary Magdalene and Jesus were married? Yes. If what I've been taught about Jews in that time is accurate, it would have been odd if a man of his age weren't married with children. These things don't bother me in the slightest. To me, it makes his willingness to die for our sins more compelling, actually. It also makes his moment of doubt in the Garden of Gesthemene more realistic. He had a life that he was giving up, not just a growing group of believers. Mohandas Gandhi was married too, but it doesn't make his sacrifices for his people less noble. Of course, one significant difference is that Gandhi was not the progenitor of a religious belief system. That's a debate for another time.

My point is to say that while it's intellectually stimulating to see this issue of the ossuaries come into the public realm, I'll still be going to mass to celebrate a faith I share with millions of other people. Amen.

Chapter 57: Progress Report

I was on vacation this past week. Nothing exotic. The living room table -- my wife's "branch office" as she likes to call it -- where my laptop lay waiting. I had two goals for the week: get a good head of steam on editing my novel, and run at least twenty miles. The running was relatively easy (as of Saturday -- with my long run still to come -- I've already got 19.2 miles under the waistband of my sweatpants). While I've not yet completed the edit (nor did I expect to in a week), so far I've gone through the first 280 or so pages of what was the second draft (of 350 pages) and culled it to about 230. At this point, I expect the third draft to weigh in at less than 300 pages. My wife's amazed. She might even read it this time!

Her inability to get past page 110 or so was actually quite helpful, as was the inability of one of my brothers to get that far. I figure I can expect about 50-60 pages from these folks out of love and family. But if they can't finish it, I can't expect anyone else to either -- especially an agent. The key is listening to my early readers and finding out why they couldn't get farther. It turns out that all the well-written character development didn't move the story along as well as I'd thought. So, much of it went bye-bye. Indeed, of the first four or five chapters, I retained two scenes, both used as backstory -- one of them much deeper in the book.

It's still not perfect. I had to add a scene, but as I was jogging yesterday I ruminated over the new scene. I'm not sure it works, and I'll need to re-read it. The two-year anniversary of my initial completion of the novel is just a little more than a week away. That is my goal: have the new edit done by that date. I won't need to take another vacation to do it, but I must say it's been one of the most satisfying vacations in my adult life.

Passing on these books

I may have bought three sets of DOAX 2 playing cards, but I have to draw the line at these two different 10th Anniversary photo books. One focuses purely on Kasumi and the other gals are crammed into the “Side B” book.


Each book features photos and art from the DOA fighting games, but the majority come from DOAX 2. They also both come with a poster. At a price of 1,575 yen each ($13 before overseas shipping and import dealer mark-ups), they aren’t very pricey.


Still, picking up DOAX 2 Best Shots or Team Ninja Freaks book are more comprehensive collections of these teaser size 10th Anniversary tomes.

Okami
I’ve been lusting over the Japanese version of the Okami Complete Works book ever since I beat the game, but the high price and trouble of importing cooled my jets. Imagine the joy when I found out Udon comics was bringing it out over here fully translated. They did a fantastic job with the Street Fighter Eternal Challenge book, so I’m looking forward to this one.

Mardi Gras at Universal Studios Orlando!

Fat Tuesday may have passed but that doesn't mean the Mardi Gras party is over! Now through April 11, 2007 you can continue the Mardi Gras celebration at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. Original Obi Wan Robe and Other Costumes to be Auctioned

The original Obi Wan Kenobi costume worn in the 1977 production of Star Wars by Sir Alec Guinness is among many other costumes and props set to go under the hammer.

The Angel Star Collection - Dubbed as the largest UK auction of costumes from TV and film will take place at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London on Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

This will, no doubt, be a very exciting event for the world of costuming. Never before have so many costumes from film and tv been auctioned at one time. The Obi Wan Kenobi Jedi Robe is estimated to be one of the most expensive at £50,000-60,000 ($97,500 - $117,000 US). The BBC News reports this to be "one of cinema's most famous". Of course, you can find licensed Star Wars costumes and costume accessories in child and adult sizes for sale at AnniesCostumes for much less of an investment. (Full costumes starting at $19.95.)

If you are short on funds or just not inclined to drop such a big load on these entertainment industry treasures, Bohnams Auction House will open viewing to the public for 3 days prior to the auction so that interested customers can get a close up view.

The famous jedi costume is only one of many iconic costumes going up for auction in this collection.

Also up for auction among the 350 lots are costumes from the Dr. Who TV series, which featured several different actors in the title role over the years. Here are the details from Bohnam's press release:

Costumes representing Dr Who include the original Tom Baker coat, Patrick Troughton trousers and Christopher Eccleston’s leather jacket all worn in the series. The remaining outfits were worn by the actors for promotional reasons but not worn on set.

The complete outfit made for Tom Baker [the fourth Dr. Who] includes a maroon wool topcoat, three pairs of trousers (tweed, grey wool and dark grey cotton), striped waistcoat, three felt hats and a striped scarf, and is estimated at £1,200-1,500. A wine coloured 3/4 length coat, complete with two large added pockets for the Doctor’s jelly beans and sonic screwdriver used by Baker in various episodes of Dr. Who (including some Dalek Episodes), is estimated at £8,000-10,000.

A Patrick Troughton outfit (the second Dr. Who) comprises full-length fur coat, tailcoat, checked trousers, shirt, tie, handkerchief and bandanas. Known for his scruffy appearance, Troughton played a much quirkier Doctor. The producers and writers behind the programme wanted the Doctor's second incarnation to be a contrast to first Doctor, William Hartnell's 'Victorian Headmaster' mode of attire. Therefore, Troughton was unveiled as, in his words, the "Cosmic Hobo," an eccentric exemplified by his unusual combination of garments, and in particular his long hair coat.

The third Doctor Who, John Pertwee, is represented through the promotional outfit consisting of black cape coat, burgundy velvet jacket, black cravat, and sonic screwdriver.

A promotional outfit for the fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson, is represented with a beige and orange-edged single breasted top coat, stripe trousers, cricket jumper, white shirt and straw hat, estimated at £1,200-1,500.

An promotional outfit worn by Sylvester McCoy – the seventh Doctor Who – including a cream linen jacket, grey pinstripe trousers, shirt, tie, pullover, scarf, shoes, cravat and hat, is estimated at £1,200-1,500.

After a 16-year absence of the series, Christopher Eccleston returned as the Doctor. In the sale is the original black leatherette jacket estimated at £3,000-4,000.

James Bond fans will be able to bid on a piece of their favorite secret agent. The auction will feature different oufits donned by both Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan; as well as several pieces worn by some infamous Bond villians, according to the Pocket-Lint website.

Some other costumes of interest in this auction include a grey linen overcoat, from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), as worn by Gary Oldman as Sirius Black is estimated at £3,000-4,000 and several outfits worn by Madonna in the Eva Peron film biography Evita (1997), are on auction including: a stone coloured coat, blouse and skirt (£500-700), a black silk patterned dress with a mint coloured and peach coloured slip (£400-500), a green coloured dressing gown, white satin and peach satin slip (£300-400) and a navy blue wool suit and blouse (£400-500).

Tekken 6 appears

Wow, this was a surprise. I figured with the release of Tekken 5: DR for the US PSN in two weeks, there wouldn’t be much news on part 6 for a while.

On one hand, announcing it’s imminent arrival for the arcades means a home release is not that much further off. EB Games lists it as July, but that can’t be right. More like Sep at the earliest is my guess. On the other hand, I do wish they could have pushed it further off so it can look as good as possible. At this point, it certainly doesn’t match Virtua Fighter 5 in the visual department.


That said, I’m loving the emphasis on more possibilities for costume customization. It seems like they are really going to town with the feature this time. Above is the super built-up version of Jack (or is it Jack -2?). At the top of this post is nicely customized Asuka Kazama. Two new characters have been revealed so far. It seems likely there will be at least a few more new faces since Namco is promising the largest cast ever.


Speaking of the new characters, well…Leo seems a bit boring. Very ordinary looking outfit. The only interesting aspect is Leo may be a woman if the voice in the preview trailer is to be believed. It would make his/her chest straps make more sense, perhaps holding in, uh, feminine bumps. I’m hoping this angle leads to very contrasting costume upgrade choices.


Zafina also looks a bit blah too. Her fighting style looks cool, but her outfit screams flea market fashion. I mean, tassled armlets and a neckerchief? T-A-C-K-Y. Even so I set her as my desktop image because I’m a man of contradictions.

Chapter 56.65: The 'I Forgot' Defense

According to today's reports, Scooter Libby will not testify. Nor will Vice President Cheney. Some are speculating that it means they're confident the prosecution has not made its case. Others are writing that Libby's memory is notoriously bad.

Did Steve Martin write this? In his old stand-up routine, Steve Martin had a bit where he would say "I forgot" to explain any transgression. It was as pathetically amusing in the late 1970s as it is today, but today we've got political operatives up on perjury charges doing it.

This man -- Libby -- is ruined. Either he's completely full of it and is covering for someone higher (his former boss perhaps?) or he actually is that forgetful. Would you hire someone who doesn't have the mental capacity to remember his potential political imbroglios? How effective an advocate can he be? Add to that his significant legal bills and his only option would be to write a memoir of life in the Bush-Cheney administration. Best seller? Possibly. But by the time it comes out, this country will be so happy they are out of office that its sales might be less than stellar.

Chapter 56.6: Cold Hearts

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. And watch out for the ice. The first "major" winter storm to hit these parts has befallen the city, lashing out with such force that the train was about ten minutes late. I'll admit the area was slick and icy, and that's nothing to dismiss, but I worry about weathercasters and their ilk who try to say with a straight face that this is a big deal. Not at all. Now, showing the one I love that she's still the girl for me, that's a big deal.

The Renaissance is alive and well

The Renaissance is alive and well in Apache Junction, Arizona. This year’s festival marks the 19th year that the two-month festival has been around. People come from all over to spend a day at the 30-acre festival to see the jousting tournaments, a falconer, the comedy troupes, giant turkey legs and $5 ale.

The revelers enjoy the escape to a different reality for a little while. Most go in costume to get the most out of their experience, the festival also boasts stages of continuous live entertainment, an outdoor circus, a medieval arts and crafts fair, a jousting tournament with performances each day, and a day-long feast.

Aside from the dressing up and watching jousts, people go for the wares that are often available at these festivals. This one is no different. For those that like trinkets, the Renaissance Fair is the place to look. There are vendors selling jewelry and various arts and crafts items. On the weekends, artisans come in and demonstrate their crafts sell their wares. During the week they replenish their stock when the crowds aren’t there.

Admission to the fair is $20 but offers a variety of activities from sightseeing to shopping, from face-painting and hair-braiding to camel rides and axe-throwing contests. This year the Arizona Renaissance Festival will be open February 10, 2007 through April 1, 2007.

Chapter 56.4: The Mouths of Babes

While I was waiting for the PATH train to embark this morning and braving the cold breeze that came in through the open doors, a mother and a small, crying child walked in. I couldn't see them through the other people standing, but I could hear his blubbering. I could barely make out the words through his crocodile tears. I wasn't sure whether his mother had taken something from him or swatted him -- possibly both. Then some words came through "...broke it." blubber blubber blubber. "You broke my head" ... blubber blubber "...broke my fucking head!"

I chuckled to myself, hoping I'd mis-heard the words. Soon after, the kid stopped crying.

Chapter 56.3: Almost There

The Super Bowl is over and the Colts have won. Soon the Swimsuit Issue will arrive to the delight of teen age boys all over the country. But as sure as bikinis were made to be removed, baseball season is right around the bend to warm the cockles of our hearts.

It's way too soon to make predictions, but I'm looking forward to seeing my Mets again. Sure, the pitching staff has many question marks, and some of the pitchers will fail. I'm ready. Get me some neat's foot oil for my glove and some pine tar for my bat. I know it's 20 degrees out, but I'm ready for baseball!

DOAX 2 Revival!

I think the last time Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 was in my Xbox 360 was early December. Suffice it to say, my interest had not been anywhere close to my near obsession with the first game. That said, I was curious to go back to the game now that I’ve had a good amount of time away.

Crystal Boutique
I had no idea the online store to purchase bikinis had been up since late December. So if one wanted to, they could buy the complete bikini set of any girl with marketplace points aka real world money. I read a post saying that buying all the outfits for every girl would cost well over $300. Wow. I then began analyzing which outfits I had not yet managed to successfully gift. If I were to go with the Crystal Boutique route, it would cost me 3,200 points ($40) to get the key ones I want (I have no desire to have completed closets for all the girls). That’s almost the cost of the whole game. It’s funny, but this has me interested again to try to get these outfits in-game. There’s a whole new sense of motivation now that the hours of work have some sort of monetary value. Eventually, I can see maybe paying $10 for the really tough gift combinations. I actually have yet to sign on and check out the Boutique. My machine is still pre-casino glitch patch and I may want to rack a few more zacks to help in the gifting quest. Stay tuned.

Best Shot
This renewed interest spread to merchandise and it just so happened that DOAX 2 Best Shot recently shipped to Japanese book stores. I’m pretty sure it’s readily available online, but I’m going to try to skip it. If I walk into the local import Japanese book store and it happens to be there, well, my resolve may not hold.


Looking through the pages posted by Moeyo, I like how they give you a front and rear view of the suits on each girl.


The provocative positions make me a bit nervous to have it readily accessable on a communal bookshelf though.


Playing Cards
I recalled that there were playing cards promised on the Japanese DOA 10th anniversary site and decided to see if they were on readily available. Japanese sellers on eBay were routinely getting $30-80 (!) dollars per deck and that’s before international shipping. There is a Kasumi, Hitomi, and Ayane deck, so three decks means big bucks. I then checked Tecmo’s US site and found them selling each deck for $25 per, but if you bought two, you get the third for free. Plus buying two at a time cost you $44.98, so you save an additional $5. On the minus side, every shipping option is expensive (starts a $10, goes up to $20) and my order was delayed a day and a half which negated the extra money I shelled out for faster shipping.


It’s still a good chunk of dough, but I really like them. I haven’t compared the card stock to the older decks, but the paper seems slightly flimsier. It’s also disappointing that three of the girls are duplicated (Lei Fang, Helena, and Tina). On the plus side, the swimsuit selections on the cards is very good. There are cool “10th Anniversary” logos” on the packaging, and the Hitomi and Ayane decks came with a sticker sheet with four mini-cards each.

Also on the Japanese site are DOAX 2 credit cards. I can confidently say I would not get this if this were available here although I do think there could be a market for game emblazoned cards. In case you were wondering, I also passed on the Kasumi faceplate. See? I have some willpower.
