Harry Potter Fever!

Are you ready? Can you feel it?

With the Harry Potter Movie coming out next month (July 11, 2007) and the final installment of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling being released on July 21, 2007, the fever is high and the anticipation is thick. So much is in the news about Harry Potter, the boy wizard. Never before has a simultaneous movie and book release caused so much pop culture hub bub. Kudos to J.K. Rowling, one of the most creative authors in the universe and one of the luckiest women in the world. Like Harry Potter, she has her own rags to riches story herself, which is amazing. Her creativity and writing talent has transformed her from a struggling single mom to one of the richest women in England. Not bad for a muggle, eh?

You can get in on all the wizarding action by dressing up in costume. AnniesCostumes.com has Harry Potter costumes and Gryffindor robes so that you can also dress as Hermoine Granger, Ron Weasley or your favorite Hogwarts student!

Chapter 63: Milestones

Some significant milestones are in sight for many future Hall of Fame baseball players. Today, Frank Thomas became the twenty-first player to hit 500 home runs (before being ejected from the game). And it's likely that sometime this weekend Craig Biggio of the Astros will become the twenty-seventh to reach 3,000 hits for his career. [Correction: Biggio knocked five base hits last night to surpass 3,000. Congratulations Craig!] Both are almost certain Hall of Famers. Thomas won two Most Valuable Player Awards in the 1990s, and while Biggio has started to slow down, he's been one of the more consistent hitters in the National League since 1988.

But they're not the only people who have significant milestones ahead of them. Of course, Barry Bonds is the most obvious, with just a handful of home runs to go before he ties Hank Aaron's record of career home runs. I'm no fan of Bonds, whose reputation has been dragged through the mud due to his suspected steroid or human growth hormone use. It's sad, too, because he was a certain Hall of Famer before he seems to have started using the substances. Add on his career-long surliness and attitude problems, and you probably have as many people hoping his hamstring snaps as he's circling the bases on 754, if not sooner, than rooting for him to break Aaron's record.

The guy I'm rooting for to reach his personal milestone is Tom Glavine, who is now three wins away from 300 for his career. After a stellar career with the Atlanta Braves, where he won two Cy Young Awards, he came to the Mets and has been solid. There was a point last year when I thought he might be able to win another Cy Young award; had he not been left with so many no decisions and reached 20 wins, he probably would have. I know a lot of Mets fans are sick of his soft-tossing and picky nibbling at the corners, but I'm a fan of smart pitching, and I enjoy seeing him work and listening to him talk about his craft.

Another craftsman is Roger Clemens, though I think we're finally seeing the final season of his remarkable career. He needs one more win to reach 350, and even though the Yankees suck, he should be able to get it despite his slowing fastball.

With such achievements in the near future, I wouldn't be surprised if Major League Baseball did something during the All-Star Game to recognize the achievements -- particularly for Thomas and Biggio. (To Bud Selig's happiness, Bonds will likely not have reached the Aaron mark by the All-Star Game.) Though Biggio doesn't deserve a spot in the game itself, I think it's a worthwhile gesture for these guys.

Fans of comics, anime and science fiction gather for Supercon in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

According to a Miami Herald article on Florida Supcon, “Villains, heroes and other staples of the animated universe were out in force Sunday, the final day of the third annual Florida Supercon convention at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North.” Almost 3,000 were expected to attend the three-day event.

Sandra Botero of St. Petersburg, dressed as Wonder Woman, and George West, 640 AM Mantalk morning entertainment reporter, horse around at Florida Supercon on Sunday. A member of the League of Villains, Botero was contemplating a wardrobe change into one of her naughtier comic book personae, Catwoman.

Vendors sold classic comic books, ornate swords, costume contact lenses and more. Britani Farley, 20, and her boyfriend Shayank Lopez, 19, of Palm City, dressed as Zelda and Link from the video game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. ''I love dressing up,'' said Farley. “It's like being a celebrity for a day.'' Fellow League of Villains member Ryan Kennemore, 29, of Cumming, Ga., was dressed as Robin in a yellow cape and black mask. Kennemore said she was in greater demand on Saturday, however, when she showed up dressed as Harley Quinn, the Joker's girlfriend.

''Anybody can be a hero,'' Kennemore said. "It takes work to be a villain.''
You can dress like either one you choose, with costumes and accessories from Annies Costumes.

Chapter 62.7: Taking a Day or Two

Life has been busy lately -- work, commuting, etc. So I have decided to take a couple days off. Of course, since I seem to have become a chronic workaholic, taking on projects that I barely have time to consider much less complete, I have things to do over these days. Here's to summer vacation!

Ivy's straps and new Rumble Roses XX downloads

The latest issue of EGM has a very cool exclusive on Soul Calibur IV. The two most interesting bits for costume fans are that the leather straps on Ivy's leg cause real-time skin identations (!) and the create-a-character mode will get tons more custom options. Maaaan 2008 is feeling like an eternity now. You can check out the issue here if you don't mind downloading the e-reader.

Rumble Roses XX new marketplace items

1 year and 3 months post release, Konami gets around to offering paid downloadable content for Rumble Roses XX. The first initial batch was the generic gamer pics assortments. Snore.

The other more recent delivery is as intriguing as it is disturbing. You can purchase the standard and superstar costumes of some characters. I think there are supposed to be more made available as the weeks go on.

In the standard game, almost every outfit in the game was available across all characters except for the regular and superstar outfits, so on one hand, it’s nice that this is being unlocked. Also nice is that once you purchase, say Rowdy Reiko’s superstar outfit, every character has access to it. None of that “you have to buy it separately for everybody” nonsense.

The disturbing part is that this clearly should have been a free feature. I would be more than happy to purchase brand new outfits not already available in the game, but this offer doesn’t feel quite right.

Now the question is, are these paid content items a sign that Konami is interested in making another RR game and is gauging interest? Nothing speaks louder than dollars when it comes to hearing from your fans. OR, did Konami see what Tecmo and the Idol Master people were doing and wanted to cash in on a dead franchise with desperate fans?

And even if this leads to a new RR game on either the 360 or PS3, will it have as much free content as we’re used to or will they hold back the majority of costumes to nickel and dime us?

That said, some users on the ero ja nai keredo boards have posted screens with some outfits and there are some interesting combos. I’m not crazy about Mistress Spencer’s outfit on Reiko, but the kimono is killer. I haven’t played the game in a while, but I think it’s BBD’s superstar outfit.

I like the concept of Miss Spencer and Candy in the Mistress outfit and Rowdy Reiko looks ok in it too.

Reiko in not bad in Aisha’s superstar outfit (or was it Sista A?), but Aisha in Rowdy Reiko’s standard costume is an awesome fit.

Crap like is tempting me to make some purchases, but I haven’t played RR XX in a long while. I was actually more tempted to purchase the costume packs for DOAX 2, but their high prices kept me away. The RR XX prices are lower (80 points vs. 400), but you get less. It might be better to use that money to buy a discounted Bullet Witch and enjoy the free costume downloads.

Harrison Ford Is Indy Again!

Indiana Jones Costume

Mr. Jones! Mr. Jones!

Here is our first look at Harrison Ford in his Indiana Jones costume on the set of the much anticipated Indiana Jones 4 movie. Very handsome, Mr. Jones! According to the Slash Film website, this photo was snapped by Spielberg himself. Last Monday, June 18th was the first day of shooting on the set; for a first look at what's new and what's the same, check out the short first day of shooting video posted on the Official Indiana Jones website by Director Steven Spielberg. The Internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/) has the movie release date as May 22, 2008. Also starring in the Fourth Installment of the Indiana Jones movie series is Shia LaBouf. Who seems to have struck it big as the newest Hollywood movie golden boy, quite lucky and quite deserving as well. Not many young actors get 3 hit movies in one summer. Dark Knight Joker Photo Update

Thanks to trevor and kidpogo95's comments, they let me know that I had posted the wrong picture of the Joker. Sorry!!!!The picture I posted was evidently a photoshopped photo of a different actor and was not Heath Ledger at all. So, here is the REAL picture of Heath Ledger as the Joker! I see there are all kinds of fake Joker pics all over the internet, so I guess it stands true that you can't believe everything you see on the internet!

So here you go, one scary Joker pic coming up:

Chapter 62.67: I Had To...

Found on the Web by accident: file this image under "that's not right."

Chapter 62.6: Another Life Ruined?

It turns out that the student driving David Halberstam was probably the one at fault in the accident that caused the writer's death. The AP article paints a none-too-pretty future for the young man, who reportedly considered Halberstam a mentor. Moreover, the boy's past was a point of interest, as he'd had several traffic infractions, including a DUI while still a minor (not that it's acceptable when of age.)

I feel sorry for the kid, and I hope he'll be able to recover from this situation. At the same time, I wouldn't blame Halberstam's widow for doing whatever she decides she needs to do. His death was quite clearly untimely.

Tekken 6 is looking…ok

New shots were posted on Game Watch, most importantly costume customization pics. I compiled the ones for Asuke and Heihachi below.

Asuka is one of my favorite characters in Tekken 5. Her yakuza-like lady boss outfit is one of the best costumes of all time. These are all tweaks based on her standard and school girls outfits so I’m hoping there are a bunch more choices.

Heihachi is also another fav and I’m digging the full armor options he has. He had some cool accessories like an eye patch and sword in Tekken 5, so this is sort of a continuation of that samurai theme.

Overall though, I’m kind of bummed the visuals aren't jumping out at me. I’m sure the game will look plenty pretty once it’s running on home TVs, but for now it’s hard to work up a ton of enthusiasm. At worst, it’s something to play till Soul Calibur IV comes out.

More on the Fab New Bat Suit!

No, unfortunately, this isn't a picture of the new Batman suit, this is the one worn in Batman Begins

The next in the series of Batman movies is called "The Dark Knight" and is set to be released July 18, 2008. Visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan's sequel to the highly successful "Batman Begins," sees Batman (Christian Bale) as he raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as 'The Joker'(Heath Ledger).

Hmmm . . .Heath Ledger as The Joker. I have to admit, that has me a bit worried, but I am a Heath Ledger fan, so I am optimistic that he can do the character justice and make it interesting. I wonder what they will make The Joker costume like, though.
Ok, evidently a quick search on the internet just ended my wait and my worry! Check this out:

Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight Batman Movie Yes, that is Heath Ledger as the Joker! Bravo! This pic came from a message board called HolyCow.com and I say, Holy Cow is right - very cool looking, very cool indeed. The next Batman film is reported to be a little darker and this image goes right along with that theme.

Now, I have to explain the reason for my initial trepidation is because the new Joker in the cartoon series looks like this:

The Joker in the Batman Cartoon Seriesand I just couldn't picture Heath Ledger as that! But now that I see what he will look like, I am quite pleased! Counting the days til July 18, 2008 . . . Plus, that's my husband's birthday!
Yeah Birthday Movie!!! : )

Ok, now onto this new Batman costume.

EW.com has some first insight at the new Batsuit that Christian Bale will don in this next installment of the caped crusader flicks. Costume designer Lindy Hemming shared the lowdown on the new and improved costume with Jeff Jenson of EW. Here are some excerpts from his online article:

ABOUT THE COSTUME:

HEAD GAMES Ever wonder why movie Batmans rarely turn their horned heads? It's because the cowls of past suits were firmly attached to the neck and shoulders of the costume — necessary to maintain that iconic silhouette and to prevent the actor from moving around inside the mask. The new headpiece — modeled after a motorcycle helmet — is separate from the neck, so star Christian Bale can now swivel his noggin side to side, or nod up and down. ''It was the hardest part of the suit to make,'' says Hemming.

CAPE FEAR Don't bother asking. ''It's top secret,'' says Hemming. Meaning...? ''Let's just say things happen to the cloak.''

BLADES OF GLORY The razors on Batman's forearms are actually part of the suit. (His gloves tuck into the sleeves of the suit.) They're retractable, and yep, they're weapons. ''They shoot at people!'' says Hemming with a Jokersesque laugh.

RAW MATERIAL The new suit is made of 200 individual pieces of rubber, fiberglass, and nylon and metallic mesh. Bruce Wayne's work duds now have a stylish texture, suggesting they're made with sophisticated new technology. ''I thought it would make it more interesting to look at and wonder about,'' says Hemming, adding that the stretchy rubber lines also help bind the costume to Bale's body.

I agree with Adam Rogers, who posted info on the new Batman Costume on his blog: Underwired. The black suit is slick and looks really great. The new changes and upgrades are clever and much more realistic than past versions of the costume. A genius vigilante like Bruce Wayne just wouldn't run around Gotham in tights, its not safe and its not practical either. Now, a suit of armor with all the latest tricks and gadgets, that's Batman!
So, as for being able to dress in a replica of this new costume, hopefully we will be able to get the costumes in stock in time for the movie release next year. I know that the manufacturer with the license, Rubies Costume Co. will make an innovative replica of this new awesome suit. I just hope they can do it in time for the release. Either way, the new Batman costume will definitely be available for Halloween 2008. I am sure they will design a new deluxe replica close to the costume worn in the movie - that will be exciting, and I will keep you posted. In the mean time, if you need your own Batman costume fix, visit AnniesCostumes.com for your Batman costumes and costume accessories.
See you next time . . . Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel! : )

Chapter 62.5: The New Republicans

I find it odd that I'm in agreement more with a couple of Republicans than with the major Democratic presidential candidates -- at least on a couple topics. New York's Mayor Bloomberg -- who I guess can't be considered a Republican now, since he's dropped his affiliation with the party -- and (I can't believe I'm writing this) Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger have outlined centrist positions and called for bridging the political divide. Of course, that's the type of thing that is always talked about during a presidential campaign, but neither of those men are running -- officially.

Personally, I doubt Bloomberg will run. All this recent discussion, and possibly even dropping the Republican affiliation, seem to be timed to his placement on the cover of Time as much as anything else. Of course, speculation about Bloomberg's intentions have been bandied about for months, now -- and he's even egged it on, like the consummate self-promoting business man he is. While I think he'd make an interesting candidate -- perhaps even a likely nominee now that he's officially independent -- I don't think he can win the electoral votes of middle America (read, the Plains states) without being a conservative. I could easily be wrong; I don't live out there. Neither does Bloomberg. And the Governator is simply not eligible, as per the U.S. Constitution. (He was born in Austria.)

I expect Bloomberg will end up doing what he's said he'd do: run a philanthropic organization, which he's been quietly putting together for a while now. Still, it might be relatively easy for him to become Secretary of Treasury (though he's more business man than economist) and return to philanthropy afterward. But even ex-presidents can do impressive things in philanthropy after their political careers are done. Herbert Hoover did, Bill Clinton's foundation is quite active; and without his post-presidential charity work, Jimmy Carter might have become a political footnote instead of one of our greatest former presidents.

No, I think Bloomy will be just a former mayor.

Fantastic Four Box Office & Costume News

Fantastic Four Movie Costumes Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer won the box office race this weekend; coming in at #1 with a huge Domestic Sales Total of $63,948,392 as of Jun. 18, 2007. This total, according to the Box Office Mojo website: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/ beats the opening weekend of the first Fantastic Four movie.

According to the IMDB website (http://www.imdb.com/) this is only the debut of the Silver Surfer, he gets his own movie in 2009. And joins the many comic book characters and super hero movies that are planned in the near future. Check out this list of planned upcoming Marvel projects.
I, for one am really excited about all of these upcoming releases. I love all the super hero movies - the action, the sci- fi and rescuing damsels in distress all appeal to me in movie terms. Plus, it makes me happy since these blockbuster movies also usually lead into blockbuster costume sales. So, check out our Fantastic Four costumes for kids and adults and also check out our entire list of super hero & comic book character costumes too!

As far as the costumes onthe set, Jessica Alba reports to the Malaysia Sun website that her skin tight costume for the Invisible Woman was quite uncomfortable. Oh, the price we women pay to look good- and that is exactly what she does!

Chapter 62.4: Conservative Truth?

Ok, a quick note -- but I'll need to read on. I can't believe what I've just read in the Los Angeles Times: a history teacher got angry because a student used the term BCE (before common era) rather than BC (before Christ), which the student got it off of Wikipedia?! And as a result of this anger, the teacher decided that conservatives needed to create a wiki-based encyclopedia that conveys the conservatives' perspective.

That's ridiculous! The point of an encyclopedia is to convey information in as objective a manner as possible. It should inherently be neither conservative nor liberal, Democrat nor Republican, western nor eastern. I recognize that objective truth is a matter of debate, but that's part of the point too. If this teacher wants to dispute BCE, wonderful! Go for it. But it's not as though it was created by Wikipedia. The term has been around for many years. Personally, I think it's an unnecessary attempt at political correctness: the timeline starts at the same point, so the Christian bias remains intact. But I think Muslims and Buddhists recognize the historical significance of Jesus, regardless of whether they agree with the tenets of Christianity. Jews have a different calendar than Christians; these things coexist without any significant problems, right?

If the teacher wants to complain about the potential for anonymous changing of Wikipedia entries, fine. That's actually being addressed in something called Citizendium. I'd rather complain about why a teacher seems to have a problem with a student venturing beyond the teacher's information in order to learn. The teacher should be helping to mold this student's mind, helping the student to think for himself and assess the veracity of sources of information. Just because a book is published, for example, doesn't mean it's accurate. Interpretations cannot be assumed to be fact. As far as I can tell, BCE is a term of art -- and not a particularly elegant one. But teaching students to only use one perspective is simply ugly.

Chapter 62.25: That's Better

What a difference a day makes. The Mets started hitting again (albeit versus a struggling Twins team). I'd like to see Jorge Sosa handle Johan Santana and his crew tonight, but Santana is one of baseball's top pitchers. It's more important to see what the hitters can do against him.

But what I like most about last night's game (which I didn't watch, truth be told) was that the bats are starting to awaken. The first five guys in the order did some damage and John Maine seems to be righting his ship. Of the previous three games against the Yankees, the Mets were able to hit in the final two -- ironically, they only won the first, 2-0.

But there are miles to go before we sweep.

Bale’s New Batsuit Unveiled

With every new Batman film there is a new costume, and the upcoming Batman movie, The Dark Knight, scheduled for release in 2008 is no different. According to a recent article on the new batman costume, the suit is made of 200 pieces of rubber, fiberglass, nylon, and metallic mesh. His gloves tuck into the sleeves of the suit, and the blades on his arms are retractable and can even shoot at people.

With a diverse set of suits worn in the Batman films, everyone has their favorite. While this new suit is definitely distinct from the one worn in Batman Begins, it has not taken the dramatic leap in transformation that previous bat suits have. See Batman costumes and accessories at Annies Costumes.

Chapter 62.2: Not So Good

Well, the Mets lost two of three. Worse things could have happened, and it was good to see the Mets score some runs again. But while the Mets retain first place, they shouldn't assume that this season is theirs for the taking. There are more than 90 games to go, and that's more than enough space for the Braves, or Phillies, or even the Marlins to supplant the Mets atop the NL Eastern Division. We've lost, but it's on to the next game. And on the way toward October.

Saturday, June 16, 2007

Chapter 62.1: Dud Rocket

Watching the first couple innings of last night's Mets victory over the Yankees, I couldn't help but notice that Roger Clemens wasn't pitching with too much velocity. His fast ball was mostly hitting 90, 91 miles per hour. Oliver Perez was in the same range -- sometimes a little faster, and I saw at least one 95 mph pitch -- but Clemens is known for his fast ball. I understand that he's 44 years old; more importantly, he knows how to pitch and has impeccable location. I'm just saying he's lost a lot of velocity.

What he also lost was the game, I'm happy to say. Let's Go Mets!

Chapter 62: Destination Mars

Ever wonder what the planet Mars might have looked like eons ago, when it might have sported water and oceans? Scientists at Cal Berkeley have come up with the image I've posted above. Take a look at what they say about the likelihood that Mars once was covered with water. Interesting stuff for "spaceophiles" like me.
